This book is a collection of ISRM suggested methods for testing or measuring properties of rocks and rock masses both in the laboratory and in situ, as well as for monitoring the performance of rock engineering structures. The first collection (Yellow Book) has been published in 1981. In order to provide access to all the Suggested Methods in one volume, the ISRM Blue Book was published in 2007 (by the ISRM via the Turkish National Group) and contains the complete set of Suggested Methods from 1974 to 2006 inclusive. The papers in this most recent volume have been published during the last seven years in international journals, mainly in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. I am in awe and at a loss for words as to how to review this book. It is this book that helped me re-member my mission and shift my focus from me to we. This book is simply amazing and life changing. I am in the stories and I am sure everyone else will find themselves in the stories too. We are the ones we have been waiting for, we are awakening. I have shifted my focus from reuniting with my twin for companionship, to reuniting with my twin to do what we came here to do. Thank you, Zeyven! I eagerly await part two :-)

A Galactic Love Story

This is a great book if you have ever wondered what the real reason for being here on Earth was. I've always felt an affinity with the stars and looking up at Sirius just makes me feel homesick. The love story is great and resonates with my own life situation. If you have ever experienced love in the way that twin flames do, then you can tell that Zeyven knows what he is writing about. His capacity to write and capture the essence of such a timeless love is excellent. The story has a real pull that keeps you reading, but it is not a novel. Rather it is a "wisdom chronicle" that enlightens the reader with each step of the journey. I really enjoyed this book and will be reading it again to drink further from the spiritual lessons it teaches.

Chock full of scripture and information!

I just finished reading this book and found it to be filled to the brim with both scriptural reference, legal suggestions, letters and personal testimony of the author. I loved the first chapter which helped me understand the initiator vs. non-initiator thought processes. I got a little overwhelmed with scriptural quotation and explanation towards the end of the book, but it just slowed me down and I had to think a little harder! ;-) Overall, great book and reference for anyone going through the painful road of separation or divorce.

This book is excellant for the Christian facing a Divorce. Gives a person a heads up into what the other party may be doing as well as provides spirital guidence and encouragement to the person whom has been hurt beyond belief. Since my divorce, I have been doing some Christian Counseling and have kept 3 copies on hand, that I loan out to others to assist with the shock and recovery process.

Can't completely recommend it

I can't say I completely recommend it, at least not until after reading more informative books about directing and cinematic composition such as Film Directing Shot by Shot: Visualizing from Concept to Screen (Michael Wiese Productions) and Film Directing: Cinematic Motion, Second Edition, both by Steven D Katz and The Filmmaker's Eye: Learning (and Breaking) the Rules of Cinematic Composition by Gustavo Mercado. I'm actually a little surprised at all the overwhelmingly positive reviews of this book and thought it needed a bit of more critical appraisal.

It seems to be part of a series of books all made in the "widescreen" format, I think trying to cash in on the HD craze. The layout of these books is similar to the 16:9 HD aspect ratio, and the books are designed to be visually appealing, but seem to be very sparse on information. There's a lot of blank white space, and what few words there are suffer from a stiffly formulaic presentation loaded with pointless repetition. Each page only features a few brief paragraphs and feels like it could have been developed a lot more. And then to waste more space, each chapter pointlessly lists the credits for each movie mentioned in that chapter - what's the point of that? I wouldn't mind it if it seemed the actual descriptions of the cinematic conventions themselves -- the meat and potatoes of the book - were more fully presented first, but it seems the credits listing eats up valuable space that should have been devoted to more fully developed discussion of those conventions.

I'm not completely panning the book... it IS a good brief introduction to "100 cinematic conventions every filmmaker should know". But that's all it is. To make an analogy, it's like a book that lists 100 great ingredients with very brief notes as to how each tastes and what kind of dish it can be used in, but has no recipes in it. The books mentioned above have those recipes... they go into great detail about staging and blocking and how to arrange actors and scene elements for various effects. The information in those books is presented in such a way that you come out with coherent understanding of how to set up certain types of scenes.

Once you have a grounding in that kind of detailed info, then a book like Cinematic Storytelling is a good addition... some additional ingredients to add to your dishes once you know how to cook them. But that listing of ingredients does no good until you know some recipes.

She is an author, dynamic speaker, artist, lover of life and serial entrepreneur. She now resides in Idaho with her husband and three children. Full of great information on self-healing in a natural way

This book has a wealth of information, much of which I believe would apply to people without a bipoar diagnosis. The author's personal story is certainly compelling and draws the reader right in. I found the information on supplementation, dietary adjustments, and removing toxins from one's environment to be the most useful parts of the book. I personally take the micronutrient supplement recommended (Q 96's EMpower Plus) as well as probiotics, vitamin D and fish oils and I have changed my salt, as she recommends.

As a yoga teacher and mental health counselor with a bipolar II diagnosis who has found the practice of yoga to be the most stabilizing factor in my own med-free journey over the years, I do strongly disagree with her views on yoga, meditation and mindfulness practices. (Yoga is not owned by Hinduism, even though it has been heavily intertwined with it, yoga predates the Hindu religion and has been practiced in other parts of East Asia and tied into Buddhist practices for nearly as long as it has been tied to Hindu practices. While there may be some Hindus who feel afronted by how we in the west have embraced yoga, most of the major yoga gurus will say you do not have to be Hindu in order to practice yoga, viewing spirituality and religion as not one in the same). The research that has been going on over the last few years on the effects of yoga and meditation on the brain and mental health in general is growing Granted, there isn't much- if any- research going on regarding yoga and bipolar per se but there is regarding yoga and depression, anxiety disorders, and PTSD to name a few. (Much of this research is going on in Massachusetts- where I live- so perhaps that is another reason why I would be more aware of this fact than others.) Also, the practice of mindfulness is one of the keystones to Marsha Linehan's Dialectic Behavioral Therapy- the most effective treatment approach to date for Borderline Personality Disorder and has also been found to be effective for treating addiction and eating disorders. I would hate to imagine people out there who could truly benefit from these practices feeling deterred because of the way they are conveyed in this book.

Having said that, I do agree with her that yoga is not just exercise, that its effects go beyond the state of one's body and this is not something to be taken lightly. I also agree that nobody should subject themselves to anything that feels wrong or at conflict with their personal values and that the decision to engage in any therapy or practice should be fully informed.

I do hope this book makes some significant impact in helping people heal their minds and bodies in very natural and healthy ways as there just isn't enough like this out there. I applaud Aspen for going forth with this, it is an impressive achievement for her, particularly when one considers what she has had to overcome.

A snowflake...

Having worked in the health care field for my entire professional life, I have recognized its numerous deficiencies, while celebrating its brilliant successes. And the later will increase with a serious focus on what the profession dubs the "Morbidity and Mortality Report," or for the non-professional, the failures. There is a subgenre of books, written by nonprofessionals of the medical field, which document their travails with the medical establishment concerning their treatment of a specific disease. To date I've read A Twist of Lyme: Battling a Disease That "Doesn't Exist" and Living on a Tightrope: Coping with Diabetes which concern Lyme Disease and Diabetes, respectively. Diabetes is relatively easy to define, clinically, although there are different types. Lyme disease is much harder to diagnosis, and it is even more difficult to find an efficacious regime of treatment. Aspen L. Morrow's book addresses medical conditions (with an emphasis on the plural) that are grouped under a fairly recently (over the past 20-30 years) invented medical term, "Bipolar," and was previously known as "manic-depressive." She uses an apt metaphor for emphasizing the plurality and uniqueness of these mental disorders: the snowflake. Each is unique. She also rebukes those who stigmatize the individuals who have these disorders with: "Bipolar and its accompanying symptoms and behavior presentations are a medical condition, not a moral or character flaw! This is one of the most difficult things for people to understand."

Realistic hope. That is what the author offers, and is a prime reason for reading this book. At the age of 22 she found herself in a padded cell, with the drain in the center of the floor, and was told to apply of disability and never to have children. And now, in her 30's, she is married with three children, and a successful businesswoman. And much like diabetes, it is all about "chemical imbalances." One has to determine what one's imbalances actually are, and the most effective methods of providing remediation, admittedly much more difficult with mental disorders than with diabetes. Morrow arranges her material in increasing degrees of complexity, or, as she puts it, from the "C student" to the "A student." She also provides summaries at the end of each chapter, but I would strongly recommend that anyone who is interested in this subject read the entire book.

Diet and exercise, as we know, are the keys to much healthy living. Morrow provides a synopsis of the problems with our food supply, with the increase in chemicals in our food, and the decrease in nutritional value which was covered brilliantly in The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals. For example, she states that an apple 50 years ago contained four times the nutrients as an apple today, and spinach (Popeye's super food!), for every 100 grams contained 158 mg. of iron in 1948 and 2.2 mg of iron in 1973. She cites the Department of Agriculture as her source for these statistics. For many of us of a "certain age" the confirmation of these statistics is the common remark that "fruit tastes like cardboard today" and a nostalgic yearning for the fruit of our youth. Another key point Morrow makes is that even with the most perfect diet, full of all the right nutrients, if what she calls our "gut flora," the enzymes in our intestinal tract, are deficient, these nutrients will never get to our brain. Her own solution is EMPowerplus Q96, 120 Capsules, which is available via Amazon, and is formulated to provide those nutrients to the brain. In fact, she said that the one relapse she had in 10 years of "normal life" occurred when a health care professional advised her to discontinue use and simply take vitamin supplements.

Being a litigious society, Morrow correctly notes that she is not a health care provider, and advises that all issues related to bipolar disorders that she raises be addressed in conjunction with a good health care professional. Ah, there is the rub, the equivalent of finding a "good mechanic" or a "good investment adviser," and precisely how one avoids the Bernie Madoffs, and the other assorted charlatans in any field is not so well addressed. Morrow gravitates towards professionals who take a "holistic" approach, as I would, but that area is particularly replete with individuals pushing simplistic (and often lucrative) solutions that are as bad as the one provided by the "big drug companies" that are so easily derided. And even if one found an excellent holistic provider, would they be taking new patients, and would the medical insurance that you have cover them? Indeed, finding proper medical solutions is enough to "drive a person crazy."

I found some mistakes as well as other assertions that are open to dispute in this book. For example, on page 81 she references Dr. Colbert's book Seven Pillars Of Health Personal Kit Workbook: An interactive blueprint for healthy living and she states that one should drink half your body weight in water daily! Turns out that is the numerical value in ounces of water that is the equivalent to the numerical value in pounds of half your body weight (which is still a lot, in my opinion.) As for cholesterol, she states: "Who knew that eating bacon and eggs cooked in butter was better for you than low-fat milk and cereal. Now you do... You will need a lot of high-quality fats to heal the blood-brain barrier..." Hum! No reference for that one. And she touts salt, and seems to have a particular fixation for Himalayans Pink Salt, without the corresponding cautions about the deleterious effects of either too much cholesterol or too much salt, of whatever origin. Finally, I felt that claiming that one is "med free" while popping 3-5 pills of (EM Powerplus Q 96) a day rather disingenuous. Sure, it might be "natural" and/or "organic", popular "buzz words," but so too is arsenic and numerous other poisons.

Her methods worked for her, a particular snowflake, and I say bravo. But I've noted several issues that I would question, and caution anyone else from simply adapted what she has trademarked as a "Med Free Method." It is most stimulating reading, which covers many other issues than what I have summarized, and overall, think the book merits 4-stars.

EXCELLENT! An Intimate and Informative Guide to Natural Bipolar Treafments

Med Free Bipolar is an excelling in depth guide to holistic measures in treating this serious mental disorder. An alternative means of sound treatment that's informational and inviting. The mind is a powerful thing and the author does a great job showing how to harness that power and make it work more efficiently. It's about gaining control without becoming dependant on drugs or meds for life.
The author writes in a personalized and caring manner and is obviously well versed. My recommendation is if you suffer from this mental illness or know anyone that does, you need to read this book. HIGHLY recommended.

Solid and accessible work.

In this book, Else Roesdahl provides an overview of the history of the Viking age as well as a very detailed account of Viking life. This is one of the better books on the subject and I would highly recommend it.

Ms Roesdahl bases her work on literary and archeological sources. Some of the work may be somewhat dated (compared to recent studies of, for example, Norse women's dress) and fairly general, but the book as a whole seems very solid. I would further recommend the following books to people to be read for further information:

A History of the Vikings by Gwyn Jones (THE leading history of the Viking age).

Reading the Past: Runes by R. I. Page (a look at how Elder and Viking-age Runic alphabets were used).

Everyday Life in the Viking Age by Jacqueline Simpson (A work with a great deal of overlap to this one)

and

Gods and Myths of Northern Europe by H. R. E. Davidson (A look at Viking-age religion).

However, the above works are more specialized than this current work. While they provide a great deal more depth in their areas, they lack some of the bigger picture. Thus I would recommend reading this book first and then looking into the above titles.

Let's go a Viking

This book covers just about everything about the vikings from their language, art, religion, government, ships, clothing, expiditions all over Europe, weapons and warfare, homes and other aspects of these northern people. The author opens up your eyes to the fact that the vikings were civilized just as much as other people in those times which helps give you a new respect for these people. It's just amazing how these people went all over Europe, the Middle East and all the way to North America centuries before Christopher Columbus and spread their culture and in turn took apsects from other cultures back to Scandinavia.

There are maps which shows where the vikings travelled and there are a bunch of pictures of weapons, ships, burial mounds, artwork and rune stones. There are also two rune alphabets that they used for writing.

Some things I didn't like was that some of the subjects were rushed through and not too informative as they could have been like very little is mentioned about the military aspects of the vikings like offensive and defensive tactics whether it be about a king's army or raiding pirates. They also don't mention that much about the vikings in North America or the Middle East which I found to be very disappointing to say the least. I guess that there was so much to cover that the author couldn't fit everything in.

Overall this is a good introductory book about the vikings at a very low price. So if you want to read about the true vikings and not stereotypes about vikings being mindless, dirty heathen killers wearing horned helmets then you should get this book.

Decent overview of the Viking era

_The Vikings_ by Else Roesdahl was a fairly thorough if sometimes a little dry account of the Viking Age, a time that lasted about 300 years, from just before AD 800 until well into the 11th century. The Vikings were a tremendously influential people, playing a decisive role in many areas of Europe; their mark is still seen today in numerous loan-words in the English language; many place-names in Normandy and the British Isles; in Ireland, where they founded the island's major towns; and in Iceland and the Faeroe Islands, where they settled.

Roesdahl took great pains to show that the classic image of the Vikings as raiders, pirates, and plunderers was one-sided, a one-dimensional view that comes to us today from contemporary clerics in Western Europe (who may have been reacting more than anything to the pagan religion of the Vikings) and in tales that were elaborated on by medieval story tellers and historians, including among the Scandinavians themselves, such as with the Icelandic saga writers. Indeed in mainland Europe at least the author felt that the impact of the Viking raids have been exaggerated, and it generally made little difference if a community was plundered by the Vikings or by some other local faction. The Vikings were also farmers, merchants, poets, artists, authors, artisans, engineers, explorers (the first Europeans to discover Iceland, Greenland, and North America), and settlers as well as warlords and mercenaries (the latter notably in Ireland and in the Byzantine Empire).

The first half of the book dealt with the culture of the Scandinavians, going into great detail about their dress, jewelry, houses, cooking, food, language, writing, personal names, their use of slaves, the role of women, the role of children, rules of conduct, their politics, land transport, ships, monetary system, fortifications, warfare, religion (both the old faith and their conversion to Christianity), their art, and poetry. I would have liked more information about their ships and I found some of these sections a little tedious at times (basically like reading long lists), but there were a number of interesting things to be gleaned from it. There were many illustrations, photographs, and maps that were helpful in the text and in two inserts; I particularly liked the photos and drawings of Viking art and of their runes.

The second half of the book dealt with the Viking expansion, discussing the reasons for the expansion and their historical role in Normandy, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Ireland, England, the Baltic region, Russia, Byzantium, the Caliphate, and their settlement of Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, Greenland, and North America (for those interested in the Greenland settlement by the way I highly recommend Jared Diamond's _Collapse_ which had excellent, gripping coverage of that, much more thorough than what I found in _The Vikings_).

I found the coverage of Viking hoards intriguing. Many hoards had coins from often quite distant regions, with coins from the Caliphate and Byzantium not uncommon. Hoards were generally not found in areas where it was more common to pay with silver and coins than with goods.

Much as has been found to be the case with classic Greek and Roman statues, many Viking items were painted. Many rune stones have been found with traces of paint on them, the usual colors being black, white and red but other colors were used including blue and green. In addition the Vikings painted shields, furniture, tent poles, and building timbers, often to emphasize decoration that had been carved in low relief.

There was a small discussion of the many loan words from Old Norse, originating from the long Viking presence on English soil (indeed from 1018 to 1042 apart from a period of five years England and Denmark were ruled jointly by one king). Everyday words such as cast, knife, take, window, egg, ill, and die come from Old Norse. Some grammatical elements, such as the plural words they, them, and their also come from the Scandinavians. Some English dialects contained a great many more loan words but they are disappearing along with the dialects.

Scandinavian poetry was often quite demanding and intricate. Scaldic poetry for instance had a complicated form, using the "heroic meter," with the lines linked in alliterating pairs, the first line of each pair with two alliterating syllables, and each line required to have internal rhyme. In addition, skaldic poetry frequently referenced stories of the gods and heroes, often by using riddles or complex and subtle references that only a knowledgeable audience would appreciate. Scaldic poetry is of course well known for the kenning, examples of which include "the sweat of the sword" (blood), "the feeder of the raven" (the warrior), or more complex ones that could only be understood with reference to their mythology.

Much has been made elsewhere about the Viking raids on Irish monasteries and Roesdahl does cover that, though the reader also learns that it wasn't just Vikings that did the raiding. The abbots of several monasteries were often the only national figures in Ireland until well into the 800s, with most of Ireland divided into tiny kingdoms struggling with complex dynastic rules. Owing to the monasteries' important economic and political importance and close ties with many secular rulers, plundering and burning down monasteries was an integral part of Irish warfare; indeed monasteries sometimes fought each other in addition to being plundered by rival kings. Further complicating things, Vikings were often employed as mercenaries in the endless wars in Ireland (the Franks on the mainland of Europe did the same thing, often setting one Viking group against another). Further, some rulers exaggerated the depredations of the Vikings to enhance their own glory (one work portrayed the Viking chieftain Turgesius as a sort of "pagan super-Viking" who among other things tried to convert Ireland to the worship of Thor, the work aiming to glorify the great Irish king Brian Boru).

Not a bad book overall, it was a useful though not especially gripping overview.
