The Oxford Handbook of the History of Political Philosophy (Oxford Handbooks)From Oxford University Press

The Oxford Handbook of the History of Political Philosophy presents fifty original essays, each specially written by a leading figure in the field, covering the entire subject of the history of political philosophy. They provide not only surveys of the state of research but substantial pieces that engage with, and move forward, current debates.

Part I addresses questions of method. Contributors discuss the contextual method, classically articulated by Quentin Skinner, along with important alternative methods associated with Leo Strauss and his followers, and contemporary post-modernism. This section also examines the value of the history of political philosophy and the history of the discipline itself.

Part II, Chronological Periods, works through the entire history of Western political philosophy. While most contributions address recognizable chronological periods, others are devoted to more specialized topics, including the influence of Roman Law, medieval Arabic political philosophy, Socialism, and Marxism.

Aspects of the history of political philosophy that transcend specific periods are the subject of Part III. Essays on topics such as democracy, the state, and imperialism trace theoretical developments over time.

The histories of major non-Western traditions-Muslim, Confucian, and Hindu-are discussed in the final Part, with special reference to their relationships to Western political thought.

Impure Science: AIDS, Activism, and the Politics of Knowledge (Medicine and Society), by Steven Epstein

In the short, turbulent history of AIDS research and treatment, the boundaries between scientist insiders and lay outsiders have been crisscrossed to a degree never before seen in medical history. Steven Epstein's astute and readable investigation focuses on the critical question of "how certainty is constructed or deconstructed," leading us through the views of medical researchers, activists, policy makers, and others to discover how knowledge about AIDS emerges out of what he calls "credibility struggles."

Epstein shows the extent to which AIDS research has been a social and political phenomenon and how the AIDS movement has transformed biomedical research practices through its capacity to garner credibility by novel strategies. Epstein finds that nonscientist AIDS activists have gained enough of a voice in the scientific world to shape NIH–sponsored research to a remarkable extent. Because of the blurring of roles and responsibilities, the production of biomedical knowledge about AIDS does not, he says, follow the pathways common to science; indeed, AIDS research can only be understood as a field that is unusually broad, public, and contested. He concludes by analyzing recent moves to democratize biomedicine, arguing that although AIDS activists have set the stage for new challenges to scientific authority, all social movements that seek to democratize expertise face unusual difficulties.

Avoiding polemics and accusations, Epstein provides a benchmark account of the AIDS epidemic to date, one that will be as useful to activists, policy makers, and general readers as to sociologists, physicians, and scientists.

From Library Journal
Epstein (sociology, Univ. of California, San Diego) provides an exhaustive analysis of how credibility is established within the field of science. He shows how a group of laypersons gained credibility within the system and what effects their "lay expertise" had on the scientific process, in particular, the effort to treat AIDS. In the first section, he discusses the origin of AIDS, showing how HIV came to be accepted as the cause of AIDS and how that theory was challenged by some renowned scientists. In the second section, Epstein offers a particularly fascinating examination of the development of "expertise" among AIDS treatment activists, who eventually played a significant role in changing the methodology of clinical drug trials. This volume, based on the author's award-winning dissertation, is highly recommended for academic and health science collections of public libraries.?Tina Neville, Univ. of South Florida at St. Petersburg Lib.

From Booklist
A well-trained physician can diagnose AIDS as a disease, but sociologist Epstein does more. He diagnoses AIDS as a political and cultural event requiring us to rethink the place of medical science within society. He shows that since its deadly appearance in the 1980s, AIDS has let loose forces subversive to the status quo. Because it has claimed so many homosexual victims, AIDS has galvanized gay activists determined to overcome the indifference and even hostility of the medical and research bureaucracy. Many others--including hemophiliacs and women's groups--have joined in the fight for a place in the professional councils discussing what causes AIDS, what available treatments should be researched, and what possible cures should be researched. These debates have made medicine and research more democratic than ever before. But they have also forced activists, public officials, and doctors to confront vexing questions about the limits of politics and the prerogatives of expertise. Nowhere else will readers find a more carefully documented chronicle of how AIDS has brought these questions to the fore. Bryce Christensen

ethnography of activism during the HIV/AIDS pandemic
By Jean Holland
This book is a must-read for anyone working on infectious disease pandemics. But it is also an important read for activists who are beginning to understand the workings of complex adaptive systems. The author does a wonderful job of gathering information from the many fronts on which activists, scientists, docs, government regulators, and the infected frantically worked in the United States to stem the rising tide of death from AIDS.
From the point at which the sentinal systems were picking up the emergence of this new disease, to the race against the clock for treatments and scientific understanding, the book covers the many policy and practical arenas in which people fought for themselves and their loved ones to beat death from this virulent, frightening infectious agent. It talks about scientific authority and de-mystifies the scientific enterprise while wondering whether this reduces the authority of science...but does not propose a solution to this dilemma. A terrific ethnography for students and for social activists of a time of great emergency, it is sure to stimulate much discussion. Sincere, careful, respectful of all players in this drama, the book teaches us about the social interactions required to handle such horrible emergencies.
Someone needs to look the same way at the AIDS syndemic in Africa. It is too bad that the folks who were looking at healthcare reform did not have this author's insightful study to help them get us ready for the next pandemic. Because, have no doubt, there WILL be one.

Dagger 22: U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, by Michael Golembesky

The sequel to New York Times bestseller Level Zero Heroes

Level Zero Heroes, Michael Golembesky's bestselling account of Marine Special Operations Team 8222 in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, was just the beginning for these now battle-hardened special operations warriors.
The unforgiving Afghan winter has settled upon the 22 men of Marine Special Operations Team 8222, callsign Dagger 22, in the remote and hostile river valley of Bala Murghab, Afghanistan. The Taliban fighters in the region would have liked nothing more than to once again go dormant and rest until the new spring fighting season began. No chance of that―this winter would be different.
Along with Afghan and International Security Forces (NATO), the Marines of Dagger 22 continued their fight throughout the harsh winter to shape the battlefield before the Afghan ground began to thaw. From one firefight to the next, the noose began to tighten around the village of Daneh Pasab and the Taliban command cell operating there. On April 6, 2010, a ground force consisting of U.S. Army Special Forces, Afghan Commandos and Marine Corps special operations conducted a night assault to destroy the heavily entrenched Taliban force, breaking their grip on the valley and stopping the spring offensive before it even began.
But nothing in Bala Murghab comes easily as combat operations wear on the operators of Dagger 22 as they lean on each other once again in order to complete their mission in one of the most brutal environments on earth.

A Must Read Account of Teamwork
By Benny D
I just finished this book and probably need a little more time to digest it all. However, I wanted to get this review out there in hopes it inspires just one person to buy the book. This is a true, gritty in the muck book about a MARSOC team that fought together, sacrificed together, grew together and died together. I have read almost every book published about the Afghan war and this book does the absolute best job of painting the picture of what life was like for SOF guys out in the armpit of hell(AFGHANISTAN). Lots of action as well, no clear political agenda (although at times I wanted to jump back in time and strangle some of the REMFs mentioned in the book for what they would not allow the operators to do). All around excellent read and I truly wish I could shake all of these guys hands. Thank you to all our Marines who fought, bled and died for us. Those who give thanks to God for you all everyday still exist out here and will never forget your sacrifice.

By David Samuel
Outstanding follow up to Level Zero Heroes. Michael Golembesky has done it again with his thrilling, honest, and real narrative about the actions of the men of MSOT 8222. This is a harrowing story of the difficult and complex situation of being a small SOF team in a ridiculous rules-based combat zone and how they overcame it. It's clear to me that these men are the best there is and have set a bar for being such a new member of the special operations community. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history, modern warfare, and the Marine Corps. Great read!

A warrior's account of the cost of war from beginning to end.
By TMoul1
After reading Level Zero Heroes, I wanted to know how the team fared in their mission in the BMG. The follow-up Dagger-22 provides does not disappoint. The 99% of Americans who will never experience or even consider military service would benefit by reading the about the actions of men like these. Being American is not about doing whatever ever you want and saying whatever you want. Being American is about standing up and putting your life on the line for your country, for your family, and for those who cannot or will not do it for themselves.

Subtractive Schooling: U.S.-Mexican Youth and the Politics of Caring (Suny Series, the Social Context of Education), by Angela Valenzuela

Subtractive Schooling provides a framework for understanding the patterns of immigrant achievement and U.S.-born underachievement frequently noted in the literature and observed by the author in her ethnographic account of regular-track youth attending a comprehensive, virtually all-Mexican, inner-city high school in Houston. Valenzuela argues that schools subtract resources from youth in two major ways: firstly by dismissing their definition of education and secondly, through assimilationist policies and practices that minimize their culture and language. A key consequence is the erosion of students' social capital evident in the absence of academically-oriented networks among acculturated, U.S.-born youth.

Review
Valenzuela s thoughtful and thorough analysis of Latino/a students experiences in a large urban school powerfully defines the educational challenges facing Latino immigrant and U.S.-born youth and outlines important elements for transforming their academic experiences. Harvard Educational Review
Professor Valenzuela s book suggests what has to change fundamentally for real reform to occur. This ethnography highlights teacher practices that need to be emulated and rewarded. There are models for becoming an effective teacher with Latino/a and other minority students. Overall Subtractive Schooling is a valuable text that is certain to become a standard in sociology courses in the areas of education, race and ethnicity, and Latino/a studies. Contemporary Sociology
What gives credibility to Valenzuela s powerful account is excellent ethnohistorical documentation and a profound knowledge of youth s thought processes. The selection of eloquent and vivid descriptions of the relationships between students and teachers or counselors permits the reader to internalize, from the students perspective, the meaning of institutional neglect, hostility, and prejudice on the part of school personnel. Qualitative Studies in Education
every government representative, whether at the local, state, or federal level, including the President of the United States, should read this book. Maybe then subtractive schooling would be seen for what it is really worth by people who have the power to subtract it from American society, and to replace it with policies of bilingualism and biculturalism. Bilingual Education and Bilingualism
In focusing her attention on caring Valenzuela provides an important vantage point from which to consider and understand the implications of educational policies and practices designed to move youngsters into the so-called American mainstream. Anthropology and Education Quarterly
a powerful and important addition to the literature on multi-cultural secondary schooling Subtractive Schooling greatly increases our understanding of the intricate complexity of ethnicity and schooling practices. At the same time, it provides a model for a more authentically caring approach to ethnography as well as a more authentically caring style of teaching. Bilingual Research Journal
groundbreaking Race and Pedagogy Project
Subtractive Schooling is an astonishing book. It focuses unblinkingly on the harsh underbelly of the American educational tradition a history that begins with Indian Boarding Schools where youngsters were systematically stripped of their language, their spiritual practices, their families and communities, and continues today in many urban schools where nothing about students families, communities, or experiences is deemed worthy by officials of constructing a meaningful educational practice. It adds important detail and description of a process that attempts to break children as a prerequisite to teaching them.
While the concept of caring in schools has become a banal cliche, a tabula rasa upon which anyone democratic or authoritarian, progressive or reactionary can scribble anything at all, Angela Valenzuela rescues the concept from complete vacuousness and insists on caring as linked to social justice, caring as political. Valenzuela has done important work that, if taken seriously, can save lives. William Ayers
The strong, beautiful writing in this book should be a potent antidote to the enormous tide of shallow propaganda coming from the English only forces. It s a powerfully documented work of scholarship, but wonderfully accessible and richly interwoven with affectionate and vivid narrative. I hope it s given the attention it deserves. Jonathan Kozol
This beautifully written book provides powerful documentation of the conditions under which many children of color try to get an education in this country. It should be read by both educators and policy-makers. And then something should be done! Nel Noddings, Lee Jacks Professor of Education, Emerita, Stanford University and Professor of Philosophy and Education, Teachers College, Columbia University
Valenzuela s credible first-hand account of the struggles of Mexican and Chicano high school students brings about a better understanding of underachievement of Latino youth, their feeling of neglect, and their call for help. This volume is a solid sociological study beyond conventional quantitative analysis. It brings the readers into the school and makes them feel in their own flesh the dilemma faced by Latino high school students. An extraordinary contribution; one of a kind. A volume that must be read by teachers and researchers alike. Henry Trueba, coeditor of Ethnic Identity and Power"

From the Author
Angela Valenzuela received the Outstanding Book Award for her book entitled: Subtractive Schooling: U.S.-Mexican Youth and the Politics of Caring at the American Educational Research Association's Annual Meeting held in New Orleans, Louisiana, April 24-28th. The Award was established for the best book-length publication in educational research and development. To be considered for the Award, a book must be concerned with the improvement of the educational process through research or scholarly inquiry and must have a research base. The author or another scholar may nominate a book as specified in the Educational Researcher journal received by all AERA members. Committee Chair, P. David Pearson of Michigan State University will present Dr. Valenzuela with the Award. Among past recipients of the Award are: Stephen Jay Gould and Carol Gilligan; James C. Coleman and Thomas Hoffer; Burton R. Clark and David F. Labaree; David Tyack, Elizabeth Hansot, Teun A. Van Dijk, and Idit Harel; Joan DelFattore and Jonathan Kozol; and David C. Berliner and Bruce Biddle.

The book was selected because, according to P. David Pearson, the head of the selection committee, "It takes a provocative cluster of issues in American education -- race, power, and language -- beyond the usual rhetoric and adopts a fresh and thoughtful perspective." It also uses a complex array of methodological tools to address a complex issue. Most important, the voice of the researcher is clear, strong, and compelling. "This is a book that dares you to read it," Pearson added, "and once inside, it will not let you go until you have finished it."

Liked the story, but research heavy
By kristinwithani
I like the concept of this book, but unfortunately Valenzuela repeats a lot of her information. The first chapter or so is very research heavy, which is sort of annoying. I liked understanding the story behind this book and I wish there was more of that. I had to read this book for my Master's in Teaching program. I don't recommend reading the whole book, but some chapters were eye opening. (Note: if you don't like authors jumping back and forth between another language (Spanish) and English, I don't recommend this book to them since Valenzuela does a lot of that, unless you are forced to read this book by a professor).

Mathematics Emerging: A Sourcebook 1540 - 1900, by Jacqueline Stedall

Aimed at students and researchers in Mathematics, History of Mathematics and Science, this book examines the development of mathematics from the late 16th Century to the end of the 20th Century. Mathematics has an amazingly long and rich history, it has been practised in every society and culture, with written records reaching back in some cases as far as four thousand years. This book will focus on just a small part of the story, in a sense the most recent chapter of it: the mathematics of western Europe from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Each chapter will focus on a particular topic and outline its history with the provision of facsimiles of primary source material along with explanatory notes and modern interpretations. Almost every source is given in its original form, not just in the language in which it was first written, but as far as practicable in the layout and typeface in which it was read by contemporaries. This book is designed to provide mathematics undergraduates with some historical background to the material that is now taught universally to students in their final years at school and the first years at college or university: the core subjects of calculus, analysis, and abstract algebra, along with others such as mechanics, probability, and number theory. All of these evolved into their present form in a relatively limited area of western Europe from the mid sixteenth century onwards, and it is there that we find the major writings that relate in a recognizable way to contemporary mathematics.

Review

"The book is based on a course given by the author for mathematics undergraduates to provide the historical background for some of their basic mathematics. Therefore the book is addressed to students, teachers, and persons interested in history who have some mathematical training. For all of them, it will provide a valuable resource."--Mathematical Reviews

Yet another good but not great sourcebook
By Viktor Blasjo
Fresh translations of important mathematical texts are of course always a welcome and valuable resource, but this book can hardly be said to be superior to previous sourcebooks. The selections at times seem quite arbitrary and the editor's introductions are brief and superficial (incidentally, they are also typeset in a larger font size than the actual translations, which I find rather tasteless).

As an illustration of the general shortcomings of the book, I am going to consider the selection from Johann Bernoulli on the use of complex numbers in integration (pp. 468-472). Bernoulli's text itself is a very dry and factual list of rules for transforming integrals using complex substitutions. In particular, it includes the partial fraction decomposition of dx/(1+x^2) into "imaginary logarithmic differentials" (as Bernoulli calls them), i.e., in effect, the integration

arctan(x) = integral of dx/(1+x^2) = integral of (1/2)/(x+i)-(1/2)/(x-i) dx = (1/2)log(x+i/x-i)

"Such transformations were extremely helpful" (p. 468), claims the editor's introduction without further discussion. Such an attitude, I think, undermines the very purpose of a sourcebook, namely to see substantial mathematics with your own eyes instead of being fed vague and unsubstantiated and uncheckable assertions by some historian about which ideas were "extremely helpful." The novelist's adage "show, don't tell" should be an axiom for historians as well---above all for all sourcebook editors. Sadly, in the present case, it is not. Inquisitive readers will suffer accordingly. As later selections in this book illustrates, even the most rudimentary facts about the theory of complex integration were not understood until over a century later. So, then, how exactly was Bernoulli's algebraic hocus-pocus supposed to be "extremely helpful"? What did the logarithm of an imaginary number even mean at this time, if in fact it was a meaningful concept at all?

All of these concerns could have been addressed in a much more satisfactory manner by including Bernoulli's main application of his idea rather than this cryptic table of hocus-pocus "transformations". In 1712 Bernoulli wrote a short and beautiful paper on how to put his imaginary formula to "real" use, namely for finding multiple-angle formulas for tan(a). If we let y=tan(na) and x=tan(a) then arctan(y)=na=narctan(x), so by the above formula for the arctangent we get log(y+i/y-i) = log(x+i/x-i)^n. Complex logarithms may be mysterious but it does not take too much courage to "cancel the log's" in this equation, giving (y+i)(x-i)^n=(x+i)^n(y-i), which is an algebraic relationship between y=tan(na) and x=tan(a), as sought. Bernoulli admits this formula contains "quantitates imaginarias ... quae per se sunt impossibilia"---imaginary quantities which are by themselves impossible. But this, he says, is not a problem since they "in casu quolibet particulari evanescunt"---vanish in any particular case. For example, if n=3 the formula reduces to tan(3a)=(6*tan(a)-2*tan^3(a))/(1-3*tan^2(a). Reducing tan(na) to tan(a) is a hard problem. Bernoulli himself had previously tackled the problem using power series, but now he is quite proud to have carried out the derivation "sine serierum auxilio"---without the help of series. One benefit of this approach, he notes, is that it shows that the relationship is "semper algebraicum"---always algebraic---which is not clear from a series approach. Apparently, he considered working with "impossible quantities" a small price to pay for this added insight and simplicity. (I learned of this paper of Bernoulli's from Stillwell's excellent book, Mathematics and Its History, which I recommend far more highly than any sourcebook for readers who want a "show, don't tell" history of mathematics.)
