Hank Runs a Bluff (From Hank the Cowdog #1: The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog) Hank has been accused of murder! In a fit of despair, Hank resigns his position as Head of Ranch Security and decides to join the outlaw coyotes on the open range. There he's known as Hunk (that's Hank in coyote language). Hank meets Missy Coyote, sister to Scraunch -- the meanest, roughest, toughest, most notorious coyote in the whole country. If Scraunch found Hank with his sister... well, look out for trouble.

"How can a nice girl like you have such a bad brother?" said Hank.

Missy shook her head. "Hunk be careful. Not safe here."

"I ain't scared. Hank ready to fight whole family for Missy."

"Hunk in trouble. Whole family here."

I looked around. She wasn't kidding. The whole danged family had arrived. We was surrounded by lean-limbed, long-haired, scruffy-tailed, yellow-eyed, hungry-looking coyotes.

One of the first rules you learn in security work is never bite if you can bark; never bark if you can growl; never growl if you can talk; never talk if you can run.

In other words, when the odds are against you, the best kind of fight is none at all. That was my strategy, see. The longer I talked, the longer I could stay alive. And who knows, I just might say something that would change Scraunch's mind about tearing me limb from limb.

A hush had fallen over the tribe and all eyes were on the two of us. He sat down and leered at me.

I leered right back, tried to anyway, though I'd never really perfected a good leer.

"All right," I nodded, "you asked for it, you've really done it this time. Come on! Get off your duff and let's settle this thing once and for all. I'm tired of waiting. I mean, I came out here to get you, Scraunch. Oh, I know you thought I was messing around with your sister. Ha! That's just what I wanted you to think. It was a trap, Scraunch, and you walked right into it.

Missy glanced at me, and I gave her a smile and a wink.

Scraunch cut his eyes toward old Gut.

"Scraunch kill chicken dog."

I marched right up to him until there weren't more than a couple of inches between our noses.

"If you're determined to go through with this, let's get it on. But first, I want you to ask yourself this question: Why would a smart dog walk right into the middle of a bunch of coyotes? If you figger it out, you'll know the secret."

Nobody moved. There wasn't a sound, not a whisper. I was in the process of checking out the escape routes when an old woman coyote (Scraunch's mother) broke the circle and came out to him. She whispered something in his ear.

"No!" he growled. "Scraunch not scared, kill chicken dog!"

The old lady went to whispering again, then old Chief Gut limped over and joined the conference. They growled and snapped and snarled -- typical coyote family discussion, I would imagine.

"All right," I yelled, "time's up. Have you figgered out the secret or shall we start spilling blood?"

The old lady led Scraunch away. He glared daggers at me over his shoulder. Old Chief Gut came over and stood in front of me.

"Not fight today."

"Rats," I said, and almost fainted with relief. "All right, if that's the way you want it. We'll let it slide this time but I'm warning you, don't ever let this happen again."

"Not happen again."

"Very good. Now, if you coyotes will just stay where you are, I'll slip out of here and get on my way."

"Hunk not understand."

Missy came over.

"Hunk stay, become coyote warrior, prove himself many fight and marry Missy Coyote."

"HUH?"

"Make warrior? Well, I...I've always wanted...but I really have to..."

I tried to ease around the three coyotes who were blocking my path. When I moved, they moved. They didn't intend to let me out of there, is the way it looked.

Will Hank escape the outlaw coyotes and return to the ranch to clear his name? Find out in Hank the Cowdog #1: The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog.(copyright ? John R. Erickson)

but there is also a great deal of value here for intermediate and advanced developers
By Anil Bavaraju
"I received this book free from SAP PRESS as part of their book review program. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions I’ve expressed are my own.”

“SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio: The Comprehensive Guide” has set the bar very high for the SAP Design Studio training's/books. Both the content and writing style in this book are of the highest quality. This book will undoubtedly appeal to Design Studio beginners, but there is also a great deal of value here for intermediate and advanced developers. Even as an expert developer I learned a few new tricks.

The part 2 of this book serve as an introduction for newbie developers and introduce the components, properties, and the application design process. They consistently follow this case throughout the book and it serves as a realistic backdrop for applying techniques.

The advanced concepts of this book is the best part, I was pleased to see the authors avoid the pitfalls of making dogmatic statements about application development concepts, and rather offer thoughtful considerations on the pros and cons of different approach.

The remainder of the book continues to dig into increasingly advanced development topics like building custom components using SDK, and some example dashboard. In whole, this is an excellent reference book created by real SAP Design Studio practitioners. I highly recommend this book.

A Holocaust Hidden From Mankind
By A Customer
This book was ahead of its time in revealing the true nature of the Bolsheviks and those that implemented its horrors as never seen before in history.Much of what Muggeridge revealed was verified in the many publications of late from those authors in Yale University Press'Annals of Communism Series'.
Ironic how so little exposure these revelations have had in our media.

Muggeridge re Bolshevik Slaughter
By Gerard Reed
One of the few journalists to clearly see--and honestly report--conditions in Stalin's Russia was Malcolm Muggeridge, whose novel, Winter in Moscow (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdman's Publishing Co., c. 1987; first published in 1934 by Eyre and Spottiswoode, London), was based upon his observations as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in 1932 and 1933. Reared in a socialist home, married to the niece of Beatrice Webb (an eminent socialist who routinely praised and defended the Bolsheviks), Muggeridge arrived in Russia with great expectations, confident he'd find the dreams of himself and his father fully fulfilled. He even considered becoming a Russian citizen and devoting the rest of his life to the socialist cause. But he'd barely arrived before he was overwhelmed with the reality of what had happened, the misery of the "workers' paradise," the illusions of Marxist slogans. So instead of writing an encomium to the endeavor, he drafted one of the most searing indictments of the Soviet system written in his era. In his introduction to this edition, Michael D. Aeshliman notes that "A.J.P. Taylor, one of the finest English historians of our time, wrote in 1965 that this novel was `probably the best book ever written on Soviet Russia'" (p. vii).
The novel is loosely structured around a corps of English visitors' and journalists' activities in Russia. Representative of the thousands of "political pilgrims" who toured the country was a woman, a devout feminist, who was delighted "to find that so many things she believed in had been put into practice--co-education, sex equality, humane slaughterer, family allowances, communal kitchens" etc. (p. 24). Another, an Anglican clergyman, "by nature mild and gentle," who had no faith in either the Thirty-Nine Articles or the Virgin Birth he officially upheld, sought a better world in Russia and agonized over the "intolerance and cruelty" so amply evident under Stalin's rule, but he took comfort in the fact that every home "had its wireless, and its gramophone, and its shelves of revolutionary literature" (p. 38). Coming to Russia for a brief visit, knowing what they wanted to see and seeing what the tour guides chose to show them, they generally returned home with glowing testimonials for the communist system.
Western journalists too gave Stalin support. They were epitomized by a man Muggeridge called "Jefferson"--clearly the celebrated, Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times correspondent Walter Duranty, who (while millions of peasants died) merely acknowledged that there was "'a shortage of some districts'" that might in "'certain very rare'" cases be called "'a famine. But, as I said in a piece I sent a few days ago, you can't make omelettes without cracking eggs'" (p. 90). Years later, Muggeridge would say that Duranty was "the greatest liar of any journalist I have met in fifty years of journalism" (p. xix). Evaluating another journalist, who solemnly praised Duranty, Muggeridge said: "The old man embodied in himself the character of his age. He was the decadence of European civilization getting a last sensation out of the establishment of Asiatic barbarism in Russia. Lines on his face traced out a record of the world to which he belonged. Co-education in creases round his nose. Votes for women wrinkling his forehead. Pacifism the slobber of his lips" (p. 93). He was, in short, "bloated, inflated, but with no core" (p. 93).
One of the characters, Wilfred Pye, representing Muggeridge, "had a simple mind" and went to Russia intent on finding the truth. "Obviously, Pye thought, I must see where people eat; how they eat, and what they eat" (p. 127). He'd always sided with the poor and dispossessed, and Bolshevism seemed to him a fully admirable movement. "It was the future; hated by all save the far-seeing and the pure of heart; hated by all save Pye and his great English Liberal newspaper" (p. 128). To him the helpless were always righteous, the impoverished were always victims, and the pursuit of justice required the transformation of society. He was proud of standing up for the "weak and oppressed, [and] when he looked at a map it was not countries he saw, but wrongs sprawling across five continents" (p. 128).
Arriving in Russia expecting to find a paradise, Muggeridge had to do little more than stroll about Moscow to see its refutation. "He saw hunger everywhere" and wondered how the Dictatorship of the Proletariat could feed him and Western journalists while allowing masses of Russians to go hungry. Determined to see more of the country, he traveled extensively and discovered, to his horror, that famine was everywhere and, worse yet, "it was organized from within" (p. 138). Peasants were dying in what had once been the bread basket of Russia, and it was clearly an officially-orchestrated starvation of the people. As Pye analyzed it, he realized that: "Marxism, the Dictatorship of the Proletariat's religion, is the most urban religion that has ever existed. It was born in underground printing presses, in dingy lodgings and cafes and hotels. Its prophets were wanderers from one European capital to another whose dreams, like themselves, were rootless" (p. 138). In the deepest sense, the Bolsheviks warred against the "earth; with the nature of things and people; with life itself, that their embodiment involves" (p. 139). In the service of an abstract ideology, Marxists easily denied both God and Reality and sought to destroy all created goods that challenged their agenda.
Muggeridge rapidly discarded his illusions in the face of the monumental evils he witnessed. One of his characters finally concluded: "Every tendency in himself, in societies; the past and the future; all he had ever seen or thought or felt or believed, sorted itself out. It was a vision of Good and Evil. Heaven and Hell. Life and death. There were two alternatives; and he had to choose. He chose" (p. 226). He chose to deal honestly with reality rather than blind himself with ideological rhetoric, to tell the truth rather than toe the party line. Walking about the decaying city of Moscow, he realized that the "litter of ideas in his own mind was the litter of ideas outside. Rootless, unreligious ideas. What a blight they had been! Piling up into shadows whose darkness cloaked a reversion to savagery. Piling up into a Dictatorship of the Proletariat" (p. 232). Under the Bolsheviks utopia had triumphed, consummating "all the dingy hopes that have echoed and re-echoed over Europe for a century" (p. 234).
When he tried to publish what he saw in Russia, his articles were disbelieved and he was called a liar. The Guardian fired him and when he returned to England he was blacklisted and virtually unemployable! Only celebrations of Stalin were allowed! But Winter in Moscow was published and remains for us one of the few truthful descriptions of what life was really like in those years.

Prescient but ignored.
By Patrick
I bought this because it was mentioned in the introduction to a book by Wassily Grossman (the author of Life and Fate, one of the great books of the 20th century).
I was initially disappointed that it was fictionalized, and that I am not familiar enough with the figures of the time to have the fun of identifying them,
but it turned out to be a very good and easy read. It is a bit depressing knowing the lack of influence it had, an extraordinarily searing account of the repressions of Lenin and Stalin, the architects of the murders of millions. Most of the authors' disgust is really for the Western fellow travellers, the "useful idiots", some of whom unfortunately remain. I presume this is not actually stocked by Amazon (a form of censorship) because the author clearly has considerable distaste for the Russian and German Jews who he implicates as both participants and beneficiaries of the October "revolution".

He is my great uncle, as I learned through genealogical research lately
By DARYL LLOYD TUCKER
In August, 1873 Dan W. Roberts and nine other men were on the trail of 27 Indians who had stolen cattle. They came upon the Indians who started firing from the cover of a gulley. Dan's brother George was shot through the face in the first volley. A man was detailed to take care of him. The remaining plainsmen attacked. I won't steal Dan Roberts' thunder by writing about what happened. Read the book. Dan would go on to become Captain Dan W. Roberts, Co. D,, Texas Rangers, serving from 1874 to 1882. He is my great uncle, as I learned through genealogical research lately.
There would be more fights with Indians, a riot to deal with in Mason, deployment to the border with Mexico (and frontier diplomacy), and on the trail of robbers and cattle thieves. This is a good book by a good man, a plainsman who rode hard, shot straight, told the truth, and served Texas.

In their own words...
By rvfd42
I've read a number of books about the Rangers. Many have been great and full if historical information. But the vast majority have come from research and record-gathering. While more difficult to read, both from a linguistic and typographical standpoint, nothing is quite as interesting to me as hearing of days gone by from the personal writing of those who were there. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more memoirs.

While scanning old books like these into digital form introduces some typographical artifacts and formatting issues, the advent of Kindle (and other e-book) versions of these manuscripts allows access to far more readers than would be possible with what few copies likely remain of these historical missives.

Thank you to Amazon and the digital publishers. Please keep them coming.

Detailed information, but writing style leaves something to be desired
By Leong Peng Kwai
This book is highly detailed, starting off with the orthography and pronunciation and moving on to grammar and reading. Each chapter starts off with some interesting background info. Following the book, you are expected to be able to read the classics of Russian literature (Pushkin, Tolstoy) by the time you are done.

However, I found the colloquial style of the book vague at times, which required a good deal of re-reading to understand. I'm no pedant, but there are times when technical language would serve to elucidate some points more clearly.

From Publishers Weekly
Big, broad splashes of action and crude but colorful characters are Sheldon's trademarks, as he demonstrates again in a new novel probably destined to join Windmills of the Gods and Rage of Angels on the bestseller list. The backdrop for this romantic adventure story is the conflict between Basque nationalists and a repressive Spanish government in the post-Franco years. Pitted against each other in a fight to the death are charismatic Basque guerrilla leader Jaime Miro and corrupt, sadistic Colonel Acoca. When Acoca brutally sacks a convent in search of Miro, four nuns escape at the urging of Sister Lucia, who has been hiding in the cloister since taking vengeance on the men who put her Mafioso father behind bars. Beautiful Sister Graciela, tomboyish, orphaned Sister Megan and Sister Teresa, who is teetering toward a breakdown, flee into the forest with Lucia, where they are grudgingly befriended by Miro and his gang. Before crossing Spain to a rendezvous point, the group splits up to more safely evade an increasingly enraged Colonel Acoca. Lucia's predicament presents an amusing counterpoint to suspense, as Rubio, the simple peasant who accompanies her, kindly explains worldly activities to a woman who knows a great deal more than he does. Not a breath of subtlety touches these pages, but goodwill and lively subplots move the book along at a spirited pace. First serial to Cosmopolitan; Literary Guild main selection.

Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, by David Lynch

In this rare work of public disclosure, filmmaker David Lynch describes his personal methods of capturing and working with ideas, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation.

From Publishers Weekly
Lynch blends biography, filmography, spiritual quotes and his philosophical perspective on the life-changing capabilities of transcendental meditation, all within two and a half hours. Having practiced meditation for three decades, director Lynch discusses how it has influenced his life and helped him to concentrate his energy. Listeners may catch glimpses of creativity and consciousness, but Lynch's rants lack cohesion and substance. Within the audiobook's short chapters, Lynch barely broaches a topic before moving onto the next, leaving listeners to question his emphasis to go "deep." The most interesting aspects arise out of his anecdotes and comments about his films, like Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. His dry rattling voice hints at the passion behind his statements, but more often comes across as insistent and almost whiny. He reminds listeners that authors do not always make the best voices for their books. However, on the sound production end, the lightly blowing wind for the quotes from the Upanishads and Sutras adds mystical air to their reading. It's unfortunate that neither his words nor his voice live up to that standard.

From Booklist
Author David Foster Wallace once observed that, as a filmmaker, David Lynch seems to care more about getting inside the heads of his viewers than about communicating a particular message to them once he's inside. With this book, Lynch offers us a rare glimpse into his own head. A longtime practitioner of transcendental meditation, a set of meditation practices popular in the 1960s, Lynch is primarily interested in communicating to readers the powerful creative vitality that he has tapped through meditation. In 85 brief, airy chapters--many koanlike and some only a sentence or two long--Lynch discusses the techniques with which he expands his consciousness, catches ideas, and gives form to abstraction. (It's not all lofty stuff: milkshakes are, it turns out, a key vehicle for creativity.) In the process, he reveals just enough biographical information, philosophy of film, and general behind-the-scenes dirt (including the connection between Lynch's Lost Highway and O. J. Simpson)to keep the attention of those more interested in Lynch's films than in his consciousness. Brendan Driscoll

Review
“The quirky helmer known for Boy Scout demeanor and twisted tales shares his creative vision in a surprisingly gentle tome informed by the underlying teachings of Transcendental Meditation. But don’t worry: David Lynch, one-time creator of “The Angriest Dog in the World” comic, keeps the proselytizing to a minimum. He addresses topics ranging from working with wood (for it) to director’s commentaries (against) in deceptively simple, yet ultimately affirming, chapters. There’s much for fans and aspiring filmmakers to enjoy.”
—Variety

“Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper," says David Lynch the idiosyncratic filmmaker whose creations include Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, and the cult TV classic, Twin Peaks. He claims that he has savored the pleasures of diving deep thanks to a 33-year practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). He describes the fun of gathering what he calls "firewood" (all kinds of ideas and things for a film), the joy he takes in seeing an aging building or a rusted bridge, and the respect he has for Fellini and Kubrick. Lynch loves making movies and diving deep, and this testament bears witness to both loves.”
—Spirituality & Practice

“In Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, David Lynch puts aside his filmic quest to get inside the viewer’s head and lets them instead inside his, an invitation almost as rare as a ticket to fiction’s Wonka Chocolate Factory, and possibly just as out of this world. Catching the Big Fish is a blend of thoughts and themes, sometimes random like a stream of consciousness, or — the analogy he personally prefers for creativity — casting a hook into a bottomless sea. The book melds biography, film analysis, philosophy and spirituality with a heart-on-sleeve sincerity, while incorporating a narrative of the author’s passion for charting the world of dreams and ideas and rendering them unto action.”
—BlogCritics

“With this book, Lynch offers us a rare glimpse into his own head. In the process, he reveals just enough biographical information, philosophy of film, and general behind-the-scenes dirt (including the connection between Lynch's Lost Highway and O. J. Simpson)to keep the attention of those more interested in Lynch's films than in his consciousness.”

An evening with David Lynch
By Edward scott brindley
I should start off my review by saying that I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly. I purchased this book partially on whim after hearing verry little about it. I've always been fascinated by art and have been a musican since I was verry young. Recently I've been creativity frustrated and have been branching out into various adventures from exploring more interesting film to starting a modest meditation practice.

I recived my copy of the book after getting off work and finished it verry quickly. It's a verry easy read, its only 180 pages and around 80 something chapters. Each of the chapters explore various topics from film makers David Lynch admires to his meditation practice. This book feels like sitting down with David Lynch for an evening and just enjoying his unique perspective of the world. I treasure this book and it has inspired me.

Meditation, Creativity, and Film
By Frank
This book has a lot of interesting information in it. David Lynch talks about his experience with Transcendental Meditation and its positive effects on him. He also talks about his strategies for living a life as an artist. And there are several different pages about the movies he's made, the actors in them, and his thoughts on film in general.

His biggest points are the importance of healthy living, the importance of meditation, and being your natural self. His advice for creativity, I thought, was pretty helpful for just about any artistic medium.

The book is pretty short. It doesn't go super in depth into any one topic. Mr. Lynch spends about a page or two on each idea. It's really interesting to hear everything in his direct voice, but some more detail would have been nice.

I loved how positive David Lynch seemed in the whole book. About the biggest thing I took from the book was his advice on being healthy yourself. He says, for an artist, you have to understand things like depression to create conflict in a story. But, if you, yourself, are depressed, it will be very hard to create. So he suggests different ways throughout the book to keep yourself healthy and still make art.

This was a great way to see into David Lynch's world through his own words. There's lots of great words, advice, and information, but it is very brief. But, if you're interested in David Lynch and his approach to life strategy, it's a great book.

It is just o.k., Lynch's thoughts on life, meditation, etc., in small easy to read doses.
By hondast1100
I read some of the reviews and was curious about David Lynch's connection with meditation and his creativity. I'll admit I have only seen one Lynch product (Blue Velvet) which I found to be an excellent though bizarre film. The book kind of goes through his thoughts on life, meditation, making films and creative methods. It is a short read and feels like reading someone's thoughts that are jotted down in no particular order. I guess I was looking for a book that would really getting into the hows and whys of Mr. Lynch's creative process and meditation method vs. short thoughts, feelings and opinions. I guess if you are a huge fan of Mr. Lynch this book would give you bits and pieces of his thought process. Overall, I thought the book was just o.k.

The Deadly River, by Jeff Noonan

Lee Raines is a recently orphaned young man, aimlessly drifting west through the Rocky Mountains, when he finds himself fighting for his life against a powerful gang in a strange, violent, war.

A car breakdown leaves Lee stranded in a small Montana logging town where battle lines are being drawn in a war he only vaguely understands. When the inevitable explosion happens, he finds himself caught in the middle. His life is changed forever as he's forced to fight for survival in a mountainous world alien to anything he has ever known.

Lee makes friends and gradually comes to grips with the loss of his parents as he wanders through the mountains surrounding the little town. But while in mountains, he innocently witnesses crimes being committed during the confusion surrounding the local conflicts. Not wanting to be involved, Lee makes plans to leave the area. However, before he can leave, Lee finds himself in a shooting war, forced to defend himself against a powerful crime boss and his brutal henchmen.

Finally the shooting stops, the sheriff makes arrests, and the known criminals are convicted. Peace seems to have finally returned to the Montana mountains. Lee settles in and takes a job while he tries to put his life back together.

But the fight isn't over. It takes a brutal ambush to make Lee and the townspeople realize that the problems were more complex than anyone had realized. A final gun battle, a battle that results in real Rocky Mountain Justice, ends the war. It also puts Lee and his friends on a path that they will follow for many years to come.

The Deadly River effectively combines a classic adventure story with both heartfelt emotion and a theme that will leave one thinking long after the book is read. It's a great read that combines the pathos of a young orphan's plight with the exhilaration and adventures that come with gun battles and fist fights deep in the Montana mountains.

About the Author
Jeff Noonan is a Montana native who retired in 2001 as the president of a nationwide corporation. He is married with four children and eight grandchildren. As a young man, Jeff worked as a laborer for farms, ranches, lumber mills, and a railroad. He then served in both the Army and the Navy, retiring from the Navy as a commissioned warrant officer. While in the Navy, he commissioned five ships at Bath Iron Works, worked in guided missile research at White Sands Missile Range, and served two and a half years in Viet Nam operations. At the time of his retirement, he was a combat systems officer in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. After leaving the military, Jeff worked his way up from an entry-level technical position to become the executive-vice president of a 900-person corporation with offices worldwide. During this era, he moved two companies into the impoverished city of Camden, New Jersey, in order to provide jobs where none existed. Then he took over a troubled seven-person North Carolina company and turned it into a solvent corporation with over 250 employees. In recognition of these efforts, a U.S. Congressional Committee officially awarded him their 1999 North Carolina Businessman of the Year plaque during a Washington, DC, ceremony. Jeff sold his business interests in 2001 and retired to his hometown where he was soon elected president of the Community Council, a position he held for four years. He was also the president of the County Chamber of Commerce for two years. His bright red hair has long since turned white and partially vanished, but he still lives very happily in western Montana.

I sent a copy to my teenage grandson because it is an excellent book also about public policy
By Nehemiah Moore
I could hardly stop reading this most recent book by Jeff Noonan. I sent a copy to my teenage grandson because it is an excellent book also about public policy, how it gets made, who makes it, and citizen's responsibility. Besides being an exciting book to read, the political problems associated with ecological responsibility are fairly presented from the corporate side as well as the consumer side. He also points the way to responsible political interaction which could give us the best of both worlds. I really liked this book!

Fiction but True
By Amazon Customer
Excellent book, well written. As a Montana resident I can only hope readers grasp the significance of the underlying ecological message the author conveys. This is a real problem in all of our western states and needs to be addressed at the highest levels or we won't have any wilderness areas left in the US. Please take the time to read the author's notes.
