Best Book on African Development for Many Years

The Politics of Permanent Crisis is simply one of the best books on contemporary Africa to come out for ages. The author, who has been writing sensibly on Africa, political reform, and foreign aid issues for many years, takes on a whole range of often contradictory academic work to help explain why Africa has been unable to grow faster despite increasingly levels of external financial assistance. Van de Walle argues coherently that local politics within many African countries have combined with donor practices to militate against the fundamental changes required for African economies to take-off. Seen in this light, the lack of reforms and disappointing outcomes from foreign aid in Africa are not mysteries, but rather the logical outcomes of the incentives under which the various players operate. This is a seminal contribution to our understanding of Africa's economic and political dilemmas -- and an excellent complement to Bill Easterly's "The Elusive Quest for Growth". If there is any shortcoming in the book, it is a minor quibble that van de Walle seems too dismissive of the role of individual leaders in sparking recovery (e.g., surely, Jerry Rawlings and Yoweri Museveni deserve some personal credit for turning Ghana and Uganda around). This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Africa's development challenges and the role of the international community.

The Puzzle of African Exceptionalism

Nicolas van de Walle's prize-winning book explains the puzzle of African exceptionalism with an intelligent and nuanced framework. Focusing on the politics behind the seemingly permanent crisis, van de Walle explains the pervasive rise of neopatrimonial rule on the continent -- a political system that depends on patronage and clientelism, and which is a feature of many low-income, largely subsistence-based polities around the world. Van de Walle's dual training in economics and political science, and his extensive experience living and working in many of the countries of the sub-continent, make this book deep, broad, and credible. I've recommended it to many who want to understand what is behind their t.v. screens: why has poverty grown in Africa? Why is this the region most troubled by small-scale political wars? Its scholarly but accessible style, complimented by extensive footnotes and references, also make this an excellent book for students.

Outstanding!!

A clear, concise and very readable book. Author writes for the reader instead of I mpressing others with style. I bought the book to refresh and learn basics of technical indicators. I was extremely surprised at the depth and ease of explanation Lebeau went into for the various indicators. Excellent for both the novice and experienced trader.

Must have book for any trader

This book really lays it out, indicator by indicator. The authors are real traders with years of experience. LeBeau & Lucas take an in depth look at the most common indicators and oscillators used in the market by professional traders. Yes, there are some dated references to computers and software, the book published in 1992, but they do not diminish the value of the material covered for each technical indicator. I must say that I have truly enjoyed reading this book and it has provided insight to my trading. You will read about real life studies for each indicator and how it performed under different conditions. How to enter and exit a trade, and which indicator is best fitted for which side of the trade. This book is truly a hidden jewel among the clutter of useless hype and false claims on today's bookshelves. I have recommended this book to several of my friends.

Realistic Advice

For those familiar with Charles Le Beau, it will come as no surprise that this volume is full of down to earth practical advice on trading the markets. While the volume is dated by it's misleading title - a large percentage of the information is timeless - even though trading with computers is no longer a novelty worthy of including in the title of a book. Le Beau runs through his approach to the markets, and gives some great fresh ways to use some of the most familiar indicators - ADX, RSI, Percent R, MacD. I'm sure there's something new here for anyone. There's more value in this book than in any webinar which promises you the keys to the kingdom - Well worth the spend.

Besides over 400 articles published in newspapers, magazines and journals of repute, Prof. Sacco has to his credit many books including Fear Factors, Fast Food Dating Your 2 Cents, Why Women Want What They Can t Have, Jack or Jill, and Thin Threads. Prof. Sacco appears regularly on television and radio shows both in the United States and Canada, and is Editor-in Chief of Vices Magazine.

Anger is not a bad emotion, but it’s how you act and use it which makes it detrimental.” He goes on to say, “Anger is a normal healthy emotion. About the Author
John Mauk has a Ph.D. in rhetoric and writing from Bowling Green State University and a Masters in language and literature from the University of Toledo. Scholarship includes an article on critical geography and composition (COLLEGE ENGLISH, March 2003). Mauk now teaches composition and rhetoric courses at Northwestern Michigan College. In 2007, he served on the NCTE Nominating Committee.

John Metz has a B.A. in English from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania (1983) and an M.A. in English from the University of Toledo (1985). He has taught first-year writing for over 20 years and currently teaches at Kent State University at Geauga in Twinsburg, Ohio.

This is a great Huggly title, and like all the others in the series, it's a huge hit with our 3-and-a-half year old. Perfect for bedtime or for read-on-your-own, the fun pictures, the great cast of characters and the riotous story lines win all around. Huggly, Boote and Grubble are the least scary monters under the earth, and their mischief and adventures are all very good-natured.
