Practical Methods for Administering Quality Systems

20 years before anyone in the US heard of ISO 9000, Juran proposed the same ideas. He described comprehensive, documented quality management systems that were backed up by performance metrics and quality audits. Juran also pioneered quality circles and teams long before these ideas became cliche.
I find Juran immensely useful in my quality practice. This book remains one the standard works that I keep going back to. Juran's concepts are much more "applied" than "theoretical". Deming's works seem so distant, and esoteric. Juran has been there, done that. And, his methods work!

Good guide and information. Looks of information that needs study; however, it is not written for activities outside of the normal plant manufacturing world where one-of-a-kind product exist and are being made.

Great Quality Textbook

This is one of the basics (the other is Juran's Quality Control Handbook, at three times the thickness / cost; I also recommend the old "DataMyte Handbook" which was a company 'give-away' in the '80's). I have used previous editions for many years, and just bought this one since there are several available used, and I've been recommending them for the thoughful and documented rationale for the justification of n=30 sample size. That's just one example of the usefulness of this text in practical statistics for manufacturing and similar business applications. I recommend it highly.

About the Author
Edward Crankshaw (1909-1984) was a British writer, translator and commentator on Soviet affairs. Born in London, Crankshaw was educated in the nonconformist public school Bishop's Stortford College in Hertfordshire. He started working as a journalist for a few months at The Times. In the 1930s he lived in Vienna, Austria, teaching English and learning German (his competent grasp of German caused him to become part of the British Intelligence service during World War II). On his return he went back to write for The Times and began to write reviews mostly musical for The Spectator, The Bookman, and other periodicals. Crankshaw wrote around 40 books on Austrian and Russian subjects and after the war began his research in much more depth. Crankshaw's book on Nazi terror, Gestapo (1956), was widely read and in 1963 he began to produce the ambitious literary works, often on historical or monumental moments in Russian Political history.

Excellent history

One of Crankshaw's best, this forthrightly conservative and sympathetic book is premised on the idea that, whatever its faults, Austria's solution to the problems of nationalism and the Balkans were not self-evidently worse than what followed in Europe. He's deliberately rebutting A.J.P. Taylor, as he also does in his biography of Bismarck.

But Crankshaw is too good a writer, and too intelligent, to beat a hobbyhorse. He writes magisterially of Franz Josef's reign and the many personalities who came and went. His description of the Franco-Austrian war is particularly good.

Readable and humane -- not to be missed by anyone who enjoys history.

all you ever wanted to know about the work-up to WWI

Even though this book was written over thirty years ago and the period has probably been subject to many revised histories, I found this book interesting because it gives the in-depth reasoning behind the actions of the various players. It includes lots of intrigues and gives a glimpse of flawed personalities. My only complaint is the writer uses personal pronouns when he should name the person and it's confusing to whom he's referring at times. It seems unbiased, but it's difficult to know if it really is without reading dozens of other books for the period. It is not a good book to go to sleep by, but is excellent when you feel the need to make yourself smarter.

Judge this book by it's cover!

This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:
I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire.
This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.
I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain.
Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

This edition is not abridged!

I just want to point out that this hardcover Everyman's Library edition is not abridged. Most of the reviews posted here apply to the Signet mass market edition, which apparently is abridged. The Everyman's edition contains both novels in full.

This edition is missing some passages from the original works. For example, there are about three pages missing (as measured from a paperback copy) from Chapter 21 of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

About the Author
Frank Z�llner wrote his doctoral thesis on motifs originating from Antiquity in the history of art and architecture of the Medieval and Renaissance periods (1987). He is also the author of a postdoctoral treatise on motion and expression in the art of Leonardo da Vinci, published in 2010. He has published numerous works on Renaissance art and art theory, and on 20th-century art. Since 1996 he has been Professor of Medieval and Modern Art at the University of Leipzig. For TASCHEN he has authored the XL monographs on Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Christof Thoenes studied art history in Berlin and Pavia, before completing his doctorate in Berlin. Thoenes was Honorary Professor in Hamburg and now lives in Rome, where for many years he has worked for the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max-Planck-Institute). He has contributed to numerous publications on Italian art, particularly on architecture and architectural theory of the 15th to 18th centuries.

Thomas P�pper wrote his doctoral thesis on 15th-century Italian Renaissance sculpture (2003). After a fellowship at the Bibliotheca Hertziana, he worked as a volunteer for the Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen. Following further appointments at universities in Hamburg und Leipzig, since 2008 he has been Professor of Art and Design History at the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences of Zwickau, where he is currently Head of the Faculty of Applied Art. P�pper has published on a variety of aspects of Italian art from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, German painting of the Early Modern era and German sculpture of the 19th and 20th century.

A great book!

Heavy book but it has a neat little contraption that when you bend the cardboard slipcover according to the directions, it forms a stand to view the book. No, we have not read it cover to cover. It's huge. But it's a real plus that we can leave it open to browse on the coffee table. Excellent photos, bright colors. The pages aren't flimsy so they're easy to turn.

This is certainly the book on the great Michelangelo. Taschen does it again. It may weigh some, but worth the effort. The illustrations are the best you can get without actually visiting the Sistine Chapel or the Bargello or St Peters. I am just back from visiting Italy and I had planned to buy the book once I came home, and it just elevates your experience, believe me. What makes it even better is the excellent scholarship and is simply written, ideal for student and layman alike. If you are interested in knowing how the western consciousness evolved culturally through the medium of art, this is what you must have, and it's not expensive for the ideas it conveys and for its timelessness.

For sheer stunning brilliance this collection is unbeatable. Considering the ridiculous crowds that surround M's works on public display, the distance from the human eyeball to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and protective casing around other of his artwork, this may be the only way (other than being a conservator) of seeing any detail whatsoever. The text is dense and interesting (although holding the book to read it is nontrivial).
