About the Author
DR. BETH HEDVA is a registered psychologist, healer and teacher with an international reputation for finding enlightening ways to meet life’s greatest challenges. She is a former on-line "Ask the Expert" for Reader's Digest and former Director of the International Council of Psychologists. Dr. Hedva was asked by the Indonesian Psychology Association to upgrade the training of psychologists and volunteer recovery workers after the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami Disaster. She developed a protocol for spiritually directed treatment for recovery from trauma that was tested in the hardest-hit areas. She has been asked to present her work for a UN panel entitled “Human Rights Violations and Recovery: Spirit, Mind, and Body Practices,” and offers counsel world-wide.

Betrayal, Trust and Forgiveness is an essential read for anyone wanting to better understand the way that they operate emotionally thru pain and healing. Beth Hedva opens the door to greater self discovery as well as deeper compassion for self and others when faced with huge life shocks and changes. Exquisite.

A Poetic Masterpiece Infused With Timeless Teachings

There are no coincidences in life. Dr. Beth Hedva's extraordinary book - "Betrayal, Trust, and Forgiveness" came to me at just the right time - a divine time.
Although our paths crossed several years ago when Dr. Hedva was gracious enough to endorse my newly birthed book on betrayal - "Breaking Though Betrayal: And Recovering The Peace Within", I was not knowledgeable of her extensive work in the area of betrayal nor of her transformational discoveries into this timeless topic. And even if I had been, I doubt that I would have been ready to receive them.
Diving into Dr. Hedva's book while crossing the Pacific on a Hawaiian cruise seemed only fitting as I immersed myself into her tender teachings. With the ship's gentle rocking and the sound of the constant splashing of waves, each chapter pulled me into a deeper understanding of betrayal while simultaneously nourishing my intuitions about it. Because there is a tendency to align betrayal more singularly to the wounds of the heart within partnerships or couple relationships, I was immediately drawn in to the subjects of each chapter such as Betrayal of the Mother, Betrayal of the Father, Betrayal of the Body, and Betrayal of Society. With the exploration of each of these betrayals accompanied with client narratives, ancient parables, and archetypal metaphors to uncover the mysteries of betrayal's injustices, Dr. Hedva guides the reader through a process of transformation - of healing - and of growth.
As mentioned, "Betrayal, Trust, and Forgiveness" was waiting for me. However, it was while reading Chapter 6 -Betrayal of the Self - that I felt I was rebirthing and reliving my past, but also reaffirming its healing transformation in my life. After experiencing a three year painful journey of self-betrayal, of forfeiting the very truths that had fueled and fed my being, I embraced the arduous journey of reclaiming them. And as Dr. Hedva writes so beautifully, "Self-betrayal is for-giving you an opportunity to know yourself much better - the truth of your reality as a human being, including your needs, boundaries, and limits, as well as your dreams, true capacities, and full potential." There was a time when I thought of my period of self- betrayal as a monstrous mistake - a disastrous misjudgment - a enormous flaw in character. This powerful chapter reminds us of the proliferous nature of self-betrayals; thus normalizing our humanness and encouraging self-forgiveness. And, it tenderly teaches us how to recognize our self-betrayals, how to recover from their impact in our lives, and how to reconnect with our authentic being. This chapter is a timeless gift.

A Helpful Hopeful Guide

I was relieved when I was reeling with the pain of my own betrayal to discover Beth Hedva's book. She helped support my belief that what felt like the meaningless shame of betrayal was a transformative event. After decades of spiritual practice, I believed the unprecedented suffering I was going through could take me deeper into myself. But one's faith and trust are seriously challenged when we are in a lot pain that does not let up.
Finding a voice that framed betrayal with such clarity as a legitimate, even necessary, part of the spiritual journey, as a sacred initiation even, helped me hold on to the thread of hope that seemed lost during the darkest times. Her work helped inform the arc of my own book "Love and the Mystery of Betrayal." I appreciated the way Dr. Hedva spelled out the steps involved in moving from the angst of having your trust shattered back to recovering faith in life's goodness. We don't go through these steps in any particular order, and it can be a long transformative time in the dark. But it is really useful to have a clear theoretical framework to refer to as a guide when we lose our way.
This book explores many types of betrayal -- by our parents, lovers, culture and, ultimately, ourselves. The descriptions of the ordeals or perils that betrayal brings (flushed out from James Hillmans brilliant essay on Betrayal) were practical and down-to-earth. It is so easy to fall into these traps, having them spelled out so clearly really helped to raise my own awareness (I fell into each and every one!) Dr. Hedva interestingly and effectively uses case studies to elucidate her points. She also offers many self-help exercises to help get through the toughest times. I would especially recommend this book for therapists and other helping professionals, as well as anyone struggling to find their way through their own dark aftermath of betrayal or abandonment.
