About the Series:

Spellbindingly Sexy

Not only is Love Potions a fabulous PN romance, it is easily one of the funniest books I have read this year. I enjoyed it hugely and with a sexy Scottish warlock, a stubborn likeable lady, a crazy bunch of relatives and magick it brought perfect laugh-your-socks-off humour and I sat here making very unladylike snorts with tears running down my face. Exactly my type of humour.

Lydia Barratt is a bit of a hermit, happiest making her beauty products with her BFF Charlotte and enjoying the quiet life. That is until Erik MacGregor, a deliciously hot Scot moves in next door with his crazy family. He's not looking for love, but something about Lydia draws him to her. Yet she refuses to fall for his charm.

Cheeky, witty and, just to confirm, very sexy, our kilt-clad wooing warlock had me spellbound. His seduction tactics had me sighing, his singing somewhat scarred me, and the banter, tricks and mischief between him and his siblings had me howling. And I loved Lydia as she's no wallflower and is feisty, funny and when it comes to giving Erik a taste of his own medicine it has hilarious consequences. But it's not all humour and seduction there's some suspense and it's one of those treats that has you convinced you have it sussed, only to fail miserably.

Whether you are a fan of PN romance or not, this is a book I seriously recommend. The first book I have read from Michelle M. Pillow won't be the last. It was an absolute joy to read and I hope we are treated to more from the MacGregor clan; they quickly proved themselves to be a completely endearing fun crazy family.

Not one of the author's best.

I have usually enjoyed Michelle Pillow's books but this one was a return. I tried - I really tried but I just could not force myself to finish it. I only got to 73% of the book and decided life was just too short to waste time on something I was not enjoying.

The writing is fine. No problems with severe misspellings or grammar usage. Good imagination and descriptions of characters and actors. Strong Alpha male. Has a plot with no huge holes in it. Usually a book of this length - I read in one setting - but I tried reading this over several days.

My main problem was with the pacing and plot. Usually when I read - I find myself turning pages as fast as I can in order to finish the book. With this book, read some, get bored, put it away, get desperate to read something, open the e-book back up, read a little more, get bored, put it away, repeat. I was never drawn to the characters or plot. The sex scenes left me cold. The description of the draw between the two main characters was overshadowed by the "magic spell" that forced the characters together. There were actions scenes but they were extremely short and rushed in order to introduce an "evil force" or another problem the protagonists have to overcome.

This was a very hard review to write because usually I enjoy the author's books and I had to really think about why this book was a killer for me since it took so long for me to actually read up to the part where I just gave up.

Very small spoiler:
A "magic spell" that makes the female protagonist turn from a very shy person to a total "slut" (the author's word - not mine) - to desire and have no choice but to give the male protagonist head in order to suck the magical and life forces from him. After that it really started going down hill for me.

Of Kilts and Of Magic

Opposites attract romances are usually fun to read. There tends to be a healthy dose of humor entwined with moments of seriousness. Love Potions is just that.

There's plenty of teasing and joking between Erik MacGregor and his family. They pull pranks on each other just because, and the laughter they induce doesn't stop even when Erik and his brothers brawl on the floor. Their sister's no saint either; her prank brings about the most delightful, laugh-til-your-stomach-hurts scene ever that involves poor Lydia.

I've never met a woman who doesn't like the idea of being serenaded. It's romance at its best--him declaring his undying love for her while the world listens in. For Lydia, that wasn't the case. Erik's impromptu serenade of her was the result of a spell gone wrong thanks to his sister. Still, I couldn't stop laughing even though I felt bad for Lydia being subjected to his caterwauling.

But there are also serious moments, mostly between Erik and Lydia. Erik's smooth, confident, and does what needs to be done to get what he wants. His attraction to Lydia is undeniable, but his methods of gaining her attention are less than stellar. He's forward and assuming, not realizing that Lydia requires a softer touch, that she deserves a softer approach. Lydia's a semi-recluse, preferring the solitude of her hillside home to mingling with others. It's not that she's not beautiful or smart or a go-getter. Her grandma was labeled eccentric and a witch. I can see why she was reluctant to leave the sanctuary of her home.

Don't think for one second her reserved behavior means she's weak. She's not. Erik might be all that and a bag of chips wrapped up in a kilt, but Lydia's got a mind of her own and she doesn't take crap from anyone. She's not shy to put Erik in his place, refuse his requests, or listen to his commands when she knows she can be of help.

Love Potions is a quick, snappy, witty, fun-filled love story about two people who hardly seem compatible but really are. This is my first novel by Ms. Pillow and it won't be my last. I can't wait to read about the rest of the MacGregor family and how their magic plays into each of them finding their own happy ever after.

Indispensable volume on the global spread of modern occultism

This collection of articles is an important contribution to academic scholarship on modern esotericism. It is the first volume to address in a systematic fashion the global spread of western esoteric currents (especially those formed in the crucible of 19th century anglophone occultism), and thus the first attempt to place the recent critical historical work on esotericism in a global context. There is clearly much more work to be done in this area, and Occultisn in a Global Perspective will not be the final word in the debate. It is nevertheless an excellent and indispensable reference for scholars interested in this area of study.

Mark McClish is a retired Deputy United States�Marshal who spent�26 years�in�federal law enforcement.�From 1991 - 1999,�he taught interviewing techniques at the U.S. Marshals Service Training Academy which is located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. During his nine years teaching at the training academy he conducted his own research on how people respond to certain questions. He�found that people will often lie in the same way. Likewise, people will tell the truth in a similar fashion. He calls his method for examining a person's words Statement Analysis�. He currently gives presentations on Statement Analysis throughout the United States and assists law enforcement personnel in analyzing a suspect's statement.

Concise

I first began to study Statement Analysis after the Susan Smith fiasco years ago. I have always been a person easily deceived by others, but was fascinated by human nature.

Mark McClish's book, "I Know You Are Lying" is, perhaps, the most simple and straightforward book I have read on Statement Analysis. The chapter break downs make the material very easy to understand, and the famous cases are real page turners. McClish has no agenda; no political stance; and seems to care little for what may be popular or not: he just analyzes statements.

What I found different with this book is his belief that people want to tell the truth. It has taken a few months to digest this. People, internally, don't want to lie, McClish explains, because of the stress it causes them. Having been trained to follow the interviewee's eyes, McClish has me much more focused on the words themselves, but here is the real key to the book:

Read it, re read it, and read it again. Memorize the principles. After awhile, it will become second nature. As this tool is developed in your mind, it will become easier and easier to spot deception, or more commonly, things people leave out.

A caveat: Solomon said that with much knowledge, comes sadness. It is true here. You will never listen to a political speech the same way again, which is a great place to train, but...

what of your friends and relatives? What about those, as Mark shows, who do not wish to give a full answer as to why they are not coming to your party? You will spot the fact that they are withholding information from you, and it may bring some sadness.

Also, you will listen carefully to your spouse and ESPECIALLY to your teenagers. My teens would get their friends to talk to me and I would be able to pick out the deception, which brought a good laugh (and still does), but what will you feel when you hear your own child being vague and deceptive? I live with that now, as it is a tool I am unable to shut down. For this reason, even co-workers can make me sad; as well as friends.

With much knowledge, comes heaviness of heart. Ain't that the truth!

Having said that, I love the book and would not trade the skill that I have sharpened in this volume for anything. There are other good works out there, but nothing seems to be as simplified and concise as this book.

If you are in law enforcement, or investigate child abuse, insurance fraud, welfare fraud, or in business where you need to know the truth; or if you are just a person fascinated by human nature, you will love this book.

Since first reading this book (3 times) I have also taken Mr. McClish's online course, and purchased his software (availble here at Amazon.) His online course is an 8 hour course that brings together everything from the book and is an excellent resource for anyone who wishes to sharpen their skills. Statementanalysis dot com has the details, and as a companion to the book, it is of great value to those of us who, in our professions, need to recognize deception.

UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2009

I am on my 5th read of this book! I have also read many other works but find that I return to McClish's book repeatedly, as it is the clearest and most concise study offered. As I have practiced his techniques, I have developed the skill to analyze "on the fly", as his "red flag" training is something that has become part of my subconcious. I have also revisited the original workbook from the online course many times, and may not take the course again. Although I recommend other works, this text is, by far, the most user friendly.

Besides the simple format, it is a real page turner of fascinating cases.

The book have a few insights on verbal clues to deception, but the author clearly overestimates it's use. He makes every word people say and how they say it a clue in the puzzle, which leaves you with the feeling that this will never work in practice.
Paul Ekman one of the foremost experts on deception contradicts the authors claims in his book Telling Lies, where he explains that you can't pick up clues this way.

This book is really a waste of money.

Four mismatched Christmas tales

This book contained four holiday romances, each of which I will review separately.

"Santa Unwrapped" by Theresa Alan - 3.5 stars

Aimee Lachaussee volunteers to help pass out gifts to sick children this Christmas, and along the way meets Ryan, a wheelchair bound hottie who has issues. She's attracted to him, but it's almost as if he's afraid to admit that he's attracted to anyone, because of his wheelchair.

The story was pretty good until it came to the end. There was no ending! At least, there was not a satisfactory ending at all. There was no commitment at all. Sex does not equal commitment. Ryan was doubting entering into a relationship at the end, so who knows if the characters ended up together or not. If the author had bothered writing an ending for this story, the story would have gotten a higher rating.

"Maybe This Christmas" by Jane Blackwood - 5+ stars

Ever wish that you could go back in your life and relive an important moment to change its outcome? Laura Randall sure does. We first meet Laura when she is an old woman, dying in the hospital and regretting her life and the mess she made of her children's lives. Her hospital roomie asks her if she'd like to go back and change things, and magically Laura is young again, still married, and her children still love her. Laura only has until Christmas Eve to recapture the love she and her husband once shared.

This was really the only story worth reading in this anthology. Oh, this story was so good! This is probably the best romantic short story I've ever read. It was so emotional and heart-stirring, I didn't want it to end.

"The 24 Days of Christmas" by Linda Lael Miller - 3.5 stars

Addie Hutton returned to her hometown after a scandal destroyed her journalism career. Frank Rayner, her former fiance and now a widowed father, offers to let her live in a house on his property for free. As Addie's step-son and Frank's daughter become friends, Frank and Addie realize that their feelings for one another were still alive.

I think I may have enjoyed this story more had it not been placed after such a warm, emotional romantic story. But since it was, it seemed to fall flat. I didn't get attached to Addie or Frank. This story was fluffy and nice enough, but didn't pack an emotional punch like the previous story.

"A Bright Red Ribbon" by Fern Michaels - 2 stars

Morgan Ames, a surprisingly childish 29 year old, had been waiting for two years for her ex-boyfriend to propose to her. He had dumped her on Christmas Eve, but had promised to propose to her two years later if he felt they were meant to be together. But as Mo tries to return home, she is stranded in a blizzard, rescued by a dog, and holes up with Marcus Bishop. Mo begins to wonder if she really wants Keith to propose to her after all.

This story was the worst of the four. Not only is Morgan incredibly childish (waiting TWO YEARS for her ex-boyfriend to come back to her, with no word at all from him, and knowing that he's sleeping with other women?!), but the characters just seemed incredibly flat. Mo and Marcus were in love with one another, although they didn't even know one another. During the year, they had probably spent less than 48 hours in one another's company, but it was true love for both of them. Yeah, right. Something with the author's writing style didn't click with me - the characters talked a LOT, and there was little description of their feelings or the situation. The characters just didn't talk - they rambled without rhyme or reason.

So, in brief, the only story worth its salt is "Maybe This Christmas" by Jane Blackwood.

Worth buying for one story

I must say that this book is absolutely worth buying for one story- "Maybe This Christmas" by Jane Blackwood. This story is emotional, the characters well thought out, and had a slightly surprising ending (it did not quite have the ending I thought it would, although the ending was very satifying). This is a story about redeeming yourself and second chances. The main character is an old woman who is an alcoholic mess, basically dying in the hospital alone, as her husband long ago divorced her and then died in a car wreck, her daughter is a prostitute who hates her, one son is in prison, and the other joined the army to escape his life with his mother and died. She is granted a second chance of living the weeks leading up to the Christmas where her husband served her divorce papers by her hospital roommate. This "guardian angel" coaxes her to sleep and when she wakes up (feeling hungover) she is young- beautiful and with a new boost of energy- her kids are once again little and relying on her, and her husband is young and alive but distant and cold, as this is what was the end of their marriage. As the protagonist relives the days that led up to the end of her marriage and the destruction of her family she is determined to change the outcome and change her life- giving up the alcohol, spending time with the kids, and trying to be a real wife to her husband. She is not only trying to save her own life, but the life of her husband and kids, since she knows what will become of all of them if things turn out the same way as they did the first time around. This story was extremely moving and I cannot help but thing it would make a wonderful holiday movie.

As for the other 3 stories in this anthology...they were, quite simply, awful. But don't let stop you from buying this book. Buy it and just read "Maybe This Christmas".

betrayed to sell a book

Linda Lael Miller and Fern Michaels are established and good storytellers. Their stories are predictable but written well enough and an enjoyable read. It's too bad that the Fern Michaels story is OLD and the 1st two authors featured appear to be placed to sell their (upcoming) books.....and they cannot approach Miller and Michaels in quality of writing nor story.

About the Author
David F. Groebner is Professor Emeritus of Production Management in the College of Business and Economics at Boise State University. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering and a Ph.D. in business administration. After working as an engineer, he has taught statistics and related subjects for 27 years. In addition to writing textbooks and academic papers, he has worked extensively with both small and large organizations, including Hewlett-Packard, Boise Cascade, Albertson’s, and Ore-Ida. He has worked with numerous government agencies, including Boise City and the U.S. Air Force.

Patrick W. Shannon, Ph.D. is Dean and Professor of Supply Chain Operations Management in the College of Business and Economics at Boise State University. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in business statistics, quality management, and production and operations management. In addition, Dr. Shannon has lectured and consulted in the statistical analysis and quality management areas for more than 20 years. Among his consulting clients are Boise Cascade Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, PowerBar, Inc., Potlatch Corporation, Woodgrain Millwork, Inc., J.R. Simplot Company, Zilog Corporation, and numerous other public- and private-sector organizations. Professor Shannon has co-authored several university-level textbooks and has published numerous articles in such journals as Business Horizons, Interfaces, Journal of Simulation, Journal of Production and Inventory Control, Quality Progress, and Journal of Marketing Research. He obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Montana and a Ph.D. in statistics and quantitative methods from the University of Oregon.

Phillip C. Fry is a professor in the College of Business and Economics at Boise State University, where he has taught since 1988. Phil received his B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Arkansas and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Louisiana State University. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of business statistics, production management, and quantitative business modeling. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Phil has consulted with and provided training to small and large organizations, including Boise Cascade Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Corporation, the J.R. Simplot Company, United Water of Idaho, Woodgrain Millwork, Inc., Boise City, and Micron Electronics. Phil spends most of his free time with his wife, Susan, and his four children, Phillip Alexander, Alejandra Johanna, and twins Courtney Rene and Candace Marie.

Great entry-level business stats book

People should stop posting reviews with those reviews based on the condition of the book received, the shipping speed, etc. You should rate the seller based on this information. The reviews here should be product-focused and based on the content of the product, value for the money, etc.

Anyways, I am completely surprised at the negative reviews for prior editions. I needed an entry-level business stats book to refresh my understanding of applied statistics before taking a more advanced graduate-level course. This book was excellent for my purpose. It lends itself well to self-study. It does present the math and formulas but doesn't overwhelm you with them. Instead it focuses on application and interpretation, which is what every book should focus on given the multitude of software programs available. There are many, many examples to reinforce the material presented. The solutions manual is also great. Very colorful and modern. The text is also succinct.

I subtracted a star because (and I hope the authors are reading these reviews)...there needs to be integration of other software packages besides Excel and Minitab. I think the authors made a good decision in moving away from in-text integration of Minitab and focusing more on Excel, but the reality is that they need to support other packages like JMP, SPSS, etc.

Otherwise, the authors did a great job, and helped me to prepare for my graduate course after a significant absence from statistical work.

Majors on the minors - online course is a useless typing test

This book has long and laborious examples which take up most of the text. It is heavy on these overly-detailed stories and short on information. But the thing to avoid at all costs is the online Pearson Course Compass MyStatLab or whatever it's called. Unless that is, you love typing in long, longer and extra long tedious lists of numbers. It is much more of a mind-numbing typing test than anything to do with statistics or business. Once you accurately retype number after number after tedious number, you've totally forgotten any point of learning that might have been related. Next, you get to spend hours and hours and hours making sure you round and truncate exactly and precisely just as the course wants you to with six digit accuracy, or guess what? You get to do it again, and again and again until you guess exactly right! Unbelievable! Oh and one more thing, the questions in the test bank for this class are only vaguely related to the text and certainly completely unrelated to the online suffering. Don't bother with the book or the online course as prep for the exams. Get yourself a real book with tough examples and clear explanations of theory and practice (unlike this book), because the tests are not easy. This online course should be administered to convicted criminals as punishment. AVOID AT ALL COSTS if you value your sanity.

Negatives
- Business Application: This book teaches you to use two different programs (Minitab & Excel) in order to do statistics. This is the biggest joke of the book! You are better off doing the the problems by hand because the ways in which they try to teach you to use excel are completely useless. My professor would give us weekly quizes and he would ask us to solve problems using Excel, but the book was such a poor tool that I would have to go and "Google" how to solve the problems with Excel and learn all over again. I spent hours and hours of extra time because I was learning how this book taught (an antiquated hand written approach) and then re-learning Excel approaches. No business does any sort of statistics this way.
- Student Solutions Manuel: I had hopes in the beginning that this would be a tool in helping me learn how the book was arriving at the answers to the questions and problems. Not only did it not help in any way to learn how to do the problem in Excel, but the written out approaches were shabby and half hearted. It seemed as though they had some teacher's aids working on this, but they had no care or desire, so they did what they needed to in order to get by, but nothing more. Such a let down.

Positives
-The only positive I can think of for this review is that I have to retake stats for my degree and I am using a different book this semester. It is called Modern Business Statistics by Anderson, Sweeney, and Williams. The focus of this book is to teach how to do statistics with Excel. This is a far superior book, especially when it comes to actual business applications.

Other classmates had older versions of this book and they were worse than the eighth edition. I hope this review is helpful to any students and to any professors.

PS If you are stuck with using this book, but do have a professor who is expecting you to do work in Excel extensively I would suggest this youtube channel for help. The guy is a professor and does a great job explaining almost everything this book left out. Best of luck! [....] I don't know if links are allowed, if they are not the channel is named excelisfun and this is the site to download his tutorials [....]

A Good HBK with Room for Improvement

Rules of Thumb Handbook:
This useful handbook, written for construction and operations engineers, is presented to field users, who need information data, trouble shooting advice, or confirmation of some decision.
This handy HBK has a room for improvement, in presentation and reorganization, but deserves more than only one star, no doubt. Referring to this book less frequently than others on Didaskalex short list, I think it is helpful for various engineers who work on Pipeline projects, and those who operate them.

Hand Book Scope:
A HBK depends on the user needs, which cannot be fulfilled by one reference, most of the time. It is not intended replace a text for the users, normally engineers. Some components are not covered; Valve actuators, Crude heaters, P. Lines capacity boosting, ...
Most pipelines need mechanically operated valves due to their size. Fired heaters are used with booster stations to reduce heavy crude viscosity, and radically reduce pump horse power. Boosting a pipeline capacity is encountered overtime, and includes booster pumps, but dictates that pipe schedule pre determination, should be considered in many times.

Pipeline Codes:
Advancing pipeline technology promoted new and revised codes of practice for the petroleum and natural gas industries. This is also mandatory for users who need to check applicable rules.
ASME code for pressure piping, widely recognized throughout the world, included design, manufacture, installation, and testing of oil and gas pipelines, since 1935, should have been included like
National Electric codes (pp. 127-129). Recently, API developed an ANSI standard for pipeline integrity standard, which should have been mentioned.

Environmental/ Safety Issues:
Environmental Defense today urged defeat of the Senate pipeline bill, criticizing it as weak and ineffectual, Environmental issues are very serious today.
Conducted Environmental Assessment (EA) is based on the condition of the pipeline as it existed at the commencement of the process The report would be contingent upon operation of the proposed project with mitigation measures that would be implemented prior to, and following, start-up of the pipeline.

Cost Estimate:

Good Resource

Pipeline Rules Of Thumb Handbook 7th ed (E.W. McAllister, Editor), is a great resource for engineers working in this field or who have to manage these types of projects. It's also a good resource for college students who have these types of classes. I especially liked how the book was setup first starting with general pipeline terms and equations, followed by again general construction practices and techniques before it delved into more technical areas like instrumentation.

One thing that I noted that was a little bit disappointing was how basic (i.e. OLD & ANTIQUATED) almost all the pictures, graphs, and tables were. From the looks of it, some of the graphs and tables were printed off a dot-matrix printer in the mid-80's and then pasted onto the page for printing. The pictures, what few are included, are predominantly dark and/or stark, industrial-type images. While the later issue is not of a big concern for a resource book - it isn't a novel - the former is a big deal. It appears to me that although the author has updated his TEXT to sharper fonts and updated a few of the figures so that they look like they were done within the last 10 yrs, the rest of the tables & graphs being so out-of-date brings the overall quality of the book down. It's unfortunate that through seven editions, the editor and Gulf Professional Publishing haven't bothered to bring the overall quality of the book up to date.

So although the overall presentation of the information kind of leads you wanting, for what it's used for - a reference manual - the Pipeline Rules Of Thumb Handbook is great at what it does.

Indispensible

For the mechanical engineer, contractor, construction site manager, or pipe fitter, this volume is a must have. The best feature of the work is its multiple indexing which makes it easy to find the solution to your problem.

While the laws of physics do not change, materials and devices do -- so this book will bring you up-to-date on any of the issues involving pipelines, including appurtenant engineering issues such as electrical concerns, etc.

You'll also find lots of common sense solutions such as how to determine the length of a roll of sheet steel. Obviously, the book also includes about every chart and graph which could possibly be relevant to this field of endeavor.

An investment in this handy volume can save you a lot of time and money on the job site. I wish that the binding were more rugged but, barring that, I have nothing but good things to say about the text.
