About the Author

Thomas Sikor has conducted research on forest tenure and politics over the past two decades, including fieldwork in Vietnam, Albania, and Romania. He holds a PhD in Energy and Resources from the University of California at Berkeley and currently is Reader in International Development at the University of East Anglia. Sikor has guest-edited a number of special journal issues and books on topics ranging from community and land reform to property theory. In his activist work, he promotes the expansion of economic, political and cultural rights to disadvantaged people in Vietnam.�

Johannes Stahl works on natural resource governance and institutions in agriculture and forestry. He holds PhD and MA degrees in Agriculture and Social Anthropology and was a Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Fellow in Natural Resource Economics and Political Economy at the University of California at Berkeley from 2007 to 2009. Stahl's research has examined forest use practices and institutions in Bolivia and Albania. He lives and works in Montreal, Canada.

Great reference for cellular matters

I bought this book because I seriously needed to catch up on the molecular and cellular side of biology, and found it the perfect reference for that. It explains genetics, photosynthesis, respiration, and other basics in enormous detail, and has less but still very useful material on plant defenses, domestication, and other matters cellular and biochemical. It is already getting a bit out of date, e.g. nothing in the defenses section on WRKY transcription factors, and the wheat domestication material is a bit old. (I am writing in 2013). But the basics are there. If you want a reference this is a fine one.
If I were teaching a course in botany, though, I'd feel a need to foreground actual plants--as organisms. This book is almost entirely about basic molecular, biochemical, and cellular processes, to the virtual exclusion of the whole plant. The domestication chapter, for instance, is about genes, with little mention of other matters. This means that GM plants are described as a technical triumph, with no mention of possible downsides. Fair enough, in a book dedicated to cellular matters; the authors did not intend to write a book about the whole plant, still less its social implications. But I would warn botany professors that this book is highly specialized and should be used accordingly.

Unique and alternatingly thorough and dense

This was assigned as the textbook for an undergraduate plant biology course that I took at a liberal arts college.

I'm not entirely sure how to feel about this book. When you open it for the first time, you'll be put off by the slightly blocky and gothic typography. You get used to it quickly, though, and I ended up liking it somewhat by the end of the semester.

The figures are relevant and beautiful, many of them being very detailed charts or networks (e.g. the reproductive cycle of mosses and ferns). I found myself referring back to them often, and our professor often included them in his lecture slides.

The breadth and depth of the topics, however, is spotty. For example, the beginning of the book spends maybe 35 pages painstakingly describing the evolution of life from primordial DNA, with no apparent aim. There is also a hilariously long and in-depth discussion of epigenetics, at the level of detail I would have expected from a genetics textbook.

The book also sometimes suffered from laundry-listing chemical, species, or anatomical names instead of providing real insight. The best example of this that I can recall is the section on secondary metabolites. The page was covered with bolded terms like "alkaloid" and "terpenoid" and many specific examples thereof, but didn't offer much understanding of these topics (How and where are they produced? How is their production regulated? How does it differ among species? How does it change with stress? Where are these compounds stored? Etc.).

I'm conflicted in my rating. Some parts of the book deserve four or even five stars. As a full-price primary textbook for a plant biology course, though, I think it deserves three.

There are a lot of nice pictures that are descriptive and explained. The only downside is that somtimes it seems like there is too much information and endless details, but it is not hard to understand.

classic history at its best

This remains the seminal work of its kind in the field and continues to be assigned by University professors around the world for use in Southeast Asian studies. Translated from Coedes native French, the book gives a clear and conscise history of the Indianization process that occured throughout South-East Asia in the first thousand years A.D. . Coedes is able to transcend the mist of time and make these civilizations come to life. He was amoung the first of the western historians to realize that the Indianization process was not one of a dominant Indian culture supplanting an inferior Southeast Asian culture, but of two great cultures amalgamating into a vibrant new form. Coedes takes us through the magnificent ruins of the Angkorian empire, in the jungles of Cambodia, and makes the ruins speak to the modern reader. He shows how every part of these cities were emersed in religous symbolism and splendor. This book is valuable for both the general and student reader. For any one interested in the history,art or religion of Southeast Asia this book is a must read.

About the Author
Carol Ann Tomlinson s career as an educator includes 21 years as a public school teacher. She taught in high school, preschool, and middle school, and worked with heterogeneous classes as well as special classes for students identified as gifted and students with learning difficulties. Her public school career also included 12 years as a program administrator of special services for advanced and struggling learners. She was Virginia s Teacher of the Year in 1974. She is professor of educational leadership, foundations, and policy at the University of Virginia s Curry School of Education; a researcher for the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented; a codirector of the University of Virginia s Summer Institute on Academic Diversity; and president of the National Association for Gifted Children. Special interests throughout her career have included curriculum and instruction for advanced learners and struggling learners, effective instruction in heterogeneous settings, and bridging the fields of general education and gifted education. She is author of over 100 articles, book chapters, books, and other professional development materials, including How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms, The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners, Leadership for Differentiated Schools and Classrooms, the facilitator s guide for the video staff development sets called Differentiating Instruction, and At Work in the Differentiated Classroom, as well as a professional inquiry kit on differentiation. She works throughout the United States and abroad with teachers whose goal is to develop more responsive heterogeneous classrooms.

Kay Brimijoin is currently associate professor and chair of the Education Department at Sweet Briar College in central Virginia, where she helped launch a master s program in differentiated curriculum and instruction and teaches courses on curriculum and instruction, assessment, literacy development, and student teaching. After 20 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience and school administration, Brimijoin completed her PhD in educational psychology with concentrations in gifted education and curriculum and instruction at the University of Virginia. She has received awards on curriculum design, research and evaluation, and distinguished dissertation work from the National Association for Gifted Children. She co-authored "The Differentiated School" in 2008 (ASCD) and a unit in "Differentiation in Practice: Grades 9-12 i"n 2005 (ASCD). Brimijoin has authored numerous articles and co-authored a 2003 review of the literature supporting differentiation. From 2000-2006 Brimijoin was a member of the ASCD Differentiation Faculty Cadre and continues to consult with schools across the country on differentiation, curriculum design, gifted education, and teacher education.

Not for students who know little about the subject

This is probably a very good book for the school principals and administrators if they want to implentment the program and want to know how to do it exactly. It is NOT a good book for students who have no background on the subject and want to know more about what differentiation is. This book never clearly define what differentiation is. It is very confusing to students. It goes right into implementation. Points are not clearly lay out (author used a lot of paragarphs and chapters to explain what the schools did). 3 out of 4 students in my small group hated this book. It includes a lot of sample worksheet for school administrators.

I borrowed the previous edition to take a look and found that it is a much better book for education majors. It talks about things in teachers' perspective. This edition talks thing in school administrators' perspective.

Reader-friendly and compelling!

If you're one of the people glued to their TV as the Enron verdict was announced, if you've watched one of the many news programs or read the magazine and newspaper articles about the Enron collapse--or, perhaps even more importantly, if you've done none of the above quite yet, you're really in for a treat!
