Unveiling a New World

DC Comics is trying something new with their approach to a separate world/franchise than their superhero universe (now equipped with 52 Earths). They're mixing some pulp heroes like Doc Savage, The Avenger, and others with some of their more iconic (a different take on Batman) and almost forgotten heroes like the Blackhawks and Rima the Jungle Girl. Azzarello is also offering new takes on Black Canary, Wildcat, and the Spirit.

The idea sounds intriguing, but it's going to take a lot to convince me that the new direction is something I want to pursue as an avid Doc Savage fan. The setting is now Los Angeles of the 1940s instead of New York for Batman, and he carries guns in shoulder holsters. That was a definite change of pace for me when I picked up the Doc Savage/Batman one-shot, and I wasn't sold them.

Azzarello is a fantastic writer, though, so I'm going to give him some time to develop the property. I loved 100 Bullets and some of the Batman stuff he's done. He's edgy and not afraid to take a story to the limit, and he doesn't shy away from the dark places in men's souls.

However, this is Doc Savage, one of the most iconic heroes out there. He's the original Boy Scout, full of honor and integrity. I grew up on Doc. I wanted to be Doc when I was 12 and 13 years old. He had fantastic adventures in faraway place I couldn't even imagine.

This initial comic serves to set up the series, and there's just too much information coming in at once. But it's a big world and Azzarello jumps into it with both feet. There's a lot of switching around, a lot of storylines that get shaken into motion all at one time.

Doc's dad has just been murdered, and there's a mystery regarding that event that gets even more mysterious. After John Sunlight was introduced (he's the only Doc Savage villain that showed up more than once), I understood that the man seen running in the first few pages of the comic was William Harper Littlejohn, Johnny, one of Doc's regular crew. So there's a lot of ties to the original Doc Savage series.

The Spirit's plot line takes him into the path of the Blackhawks, and I'm certain all of this is going to tie up somewhere. Azzarello is a dedicated plotter and master of twists, so I'm enjoying the different takes on various aspects of the mythos.

I'm going to enjoy the series as its own construct, but I can't help feeling the shadow (pun intended) of the old pulps hanging over this series. I'm glad I'm going to be surprised and occasionally (I'm certain) offended, but part of me (that 12 year old boy) still wishes someone would take a run at Doc in a pure vein. I'm waiting to see what the Doc Savage monthly title springing out of this six-issue mini-series is going to do.

This First Wave feels very much like a rollercoaster ride, and I'm looking forward to/dreading each hairpin curve and torturous descent.

A great reference

I think that a proper name for this book should be something like: Aspects of Fluid Dynamics, and not Introduction to Fluid Dynamics. It is by no means an introduction, but it is also not a comprehensive book (for example, compressible flow is completely missing). Personally, I haven't done fluid dynamics for more than 20 years (after being a fluid dynamicist), so I re-read this book to refresh my knowledge. Therefore, it is hard for me to tell if a complete stranger to this field can master the book, but my bet is no. I also suspect that the author took for granted that the reader can guess the missing steps in many of the derivations; sometimes, the text looks like a survey, and all you can do is to try your luck in deriving yourself, or to find the proper reference. He also uses vector and tensor notations interchangeably, and sometimes is it a bit irritating.
Saying all these negative things (minus one star), I still consider it as an excellent book, and as an important reference. Written by a mathematician, the math is rigorous (also, I didn't find typos), and in addition, there are plenty of physical explanations. In addition to the regular derivation of the basic equations, the book presents various interesting phenomena (as expected from the editor of JFM); from drops in creeping flow, to rotating geophysical flow. Also, a comprehensive treatment of vorticity, and also a nice derivation of the added mass tensor in impulsive flow (although classical Lamb's Hydrodynamics does the best job on this issue).
To summarize, it is a mind stimulating book, some parts are really fun to read, it presents a wide range of phenomena, but it is not the proper book for novices in fluid dynamics.

Classic in Fluid mechanics

G.K.Batchelor was regarded as the leading figure in fluid mechanics from 1950 ~ 2000. He was a founder of AMTP(Applied mathmatics and theoretical physics) group in Cambridge Univ. and also a founder of 'Jounal of Fluid Mechanics', a leading and top class journal in the field of fluid mechanics. Also was a favorite student of G.I.Taylor.
I think this volume is a bridge between the old classic(ex. H. Lamb's Hydrodynamics) and today's many texts for fluid mechanics somewhat biased to applications and computations.
It deals with all branches of fluid mechanics except Gas dynamics, free convection, lubrication theory, magnetohydrodynamics and hydrodynamics stability. The first three chapters summarise basic concepts in thermo & fluid mechanics and trasport phenomena. I think chapter 1,2,3 are very severe and deep. And there are collections of important photos of fluid phenomena.(You can also refer M. Van Dyke's 'An album of fluid motion)
Although the title is 'An introduction to...' it's not an introductory level, and the mathematics it deals are somewhat omitted. I think this text is an advance graduate level.

Good introduction

This book introduces lots of stuffs. I will consider it
as reference purpose. Not that good for learning, especially
for beginners. If one has another book as textbook already,
with this book, he can have more comprehensive thinkings
about fluid dynamics. It's a good book right on from
textbooks to special-purposed books.

For your enthusiastic friends

Buy this book for any of your friends or relatives who think they are smart about their investments. This well written chronicle of famous cases of financial fraud during the last decade or two is important because of its perspective. It places us, the individual investors, in the center with our desire to find a decent return on our capital in a world of opacity, tremendous complexity and greedy intermediaries.
Many smart and supposedly financially sophisticated people lost fortunes through Enron, Bernie Madoff and many others. Gough looks at what messages these investors were ignoring because they were dazzled by the prospect of stellar returns. And it's not only individuals who are hurt. Gough tells us about about the travails of Jefferson County, Alabama, but I personally know that Haddasah Hospital in Jerusalem, one of the Israel's premier research hospitals, has not yet fully recovered from the effects of Bernie Madoff, who managed their endowment. The money was placed with Madoff by the Hadassah women's organization in the US who were renowned for their hard nosed financial acumen.
In the end of the day Gough exhorts us to make use of what he calls "the one fantastic right that private investors have and so many finance professionals don't:" to defer decisions when we don't have enough information. Getting that information, he makes clear, is our own responsibility, and he provides a detailed description of the pitfalls in store who truly believe that yes, there is a free lunch.

Reads like a collection of short stories, unfortunately, it's all true

Very good book. Easy to read and understand. All the chapters were just the right length. The book tells the stories of a number of financial conmen and zooms in on some famous ones such as Bernie Madoff, Allen Stanford and Crazy Eddie Antar.

What I liked about the book is that it focused on the human side of the conmen and made a story out of their exploits instead of concentrating on the financial side of things. It runs through the background of the various conmen and how they were able to gain their victims trust - whether it was the lavish lifestyle of Allen Stanford, the official positions such as that held by Bernie Madoff or the television advertising of Crazy Eddie.

The book also explains how these villains probably didn't set out to be bad but chose illegal methods when their businesses ran into difficulties or when they became greedy.

The most useful sections of the book are when it tries to work out whether these frauds could have been detected earlier and the lessons that can be learnt from these crooks. The book discusses whether looking at the published accounts or taking note of magazine articles which were critical of the fraudsters could have helped.

Unfortunately, the book more or less concludes that a fraudster with enough knowledge, experience and money can probably get away with fraud for quite some time. Often the auditors who were supposed to detect the fraud early looked the other way because of the huge fees they were getting from the organisations in question.

Well worth reading if only to realise that financial fraud has been going on for decades and the modus operandi hasn't really changed all that much. Also, because financial fraud is so difficult to detect, the wisest course of action is portfolio diversification to avoid the situation some of Bernie Madoff's clients found themselves in - ruined because they had parked all their liquid financial assets with him.

Another fast Adventure

Wow! I did'nt think Andrew's and Judy's adventures could get muct better than 1-5 of the Andrew's books. But, here it is: Andrew lost in the Whale is my favorite! When Andrew shows Judy The Water Bug...it was no big deal. That changes really fast when he accidently pushes the Search for the Giant Sqiud button. It is at this point that Andrew, Judy, and Thud begin
an adventure that takes them to helping Whales and riding out terrible storms in the ocean near Hawaii. I loved this book and found every chapter holding my attention and keeping me on the edge of my seat.

About the Author
Frederick William Faber lived from 1814-1863 and grew up in Westmorland, England. Though he held to Calvinism in his youth, Frederick had given it up 1837, when he became a fellow of the National Scholars Foundation. He wrote many hymns, poems and other works, including Faith of Our Fathers, The Pilgrims of the Night, The Eternal Father, All for Jesus, Spiritual Conferences, and The Foot of the Cross.
Frederick Faber also founded the Wilfridian religious community at St. Wilfrid's, with John Henry Newman as the eventual superior when the order merged with the Oratory of St. Philip Neri. He died on September 26, 1863.

A MUST have for aspiring animators and story artists!

I own many art books. I'm an artist and an animator by trade, so I favor those sorts of art books. There will be days where I sit in my living room, a stack of them all around me, and I'll read through them for hours. So I knew, as a fan of the show's background designs specifically, that I needed to add Adventure Time: The Art of Ooo to my collection as soon as I heard of its release.
I was not disappointed.
In fact, The Art of Ooo has changed my expectations for art books. This book is special. It's the book I recommend to those aspiring toward an animation career regardless on if they've seen Adventure Time or not. This book is THOROUGH; it is so much more than a collection of beautiful illustrations. You get the show's origin story. You learn about the team behind the Adventure Time universe. You glimpse their studio process, their pitch bible, and even the art tests they send to prospective new recruits. I learned so much from this book. I'm STILL learning so much from this book.
The Art of Ooo is huge. You won't be carrying this book with you on the train to read during your commute -- heck, it's difficult enough reading it before bed! The book is heavy, but it's overflowing with excellent information and amazing artwork. Out of my entire collection, this art book is my favorite. It'll surely become yours, too!

Even a quick glance through will provide you with tons of insight into characters and their origins, a deeper reading adds just that much more understanding to the Land of Ooo and all its awesome inhabitants. Definitely, strongly recommend.

Physical damage, but great content.

My book was damaged. The front of the cover was torn at the bottom. The packaging was intact. Lame. The book is great though. Pretty much everything you could want to know or see about Adventure Time is here. I especially liked all of the sketches and how it included the rejected drawings and the accepted ones. It's pretty fun to imagine Finn carrying one of the reject swords or all of Marcy's outfit concepts and hair styles that we never saw. Lots of fun. There's a lot of art that you just never see in the show. It also features a lot of still by still images of some of the best scenes artistically. Like Jake stretching his body through a mesh wall. I especially like the art from the earlier episodes. You can see how it was more similar to your standard, kind of raunchy modern Cartoon Network show, and then slowly evolved into its own little universe and totally changed with time.
