About the Author

Janick Bergeron is a Scientist at Synopsys, Inc. He is the author of the best-selling book Writing Testbenches: Functional Verification of HDL Models and the moderator of the Verification Guild. Prior to joining Synopsys, Janick worked on verification methodology at Qualis Design Corporation and Bell-Northern Research. He holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the Universit� du Qu�bec, and an MBA degree granted through the University of Oregon.

Eduard Cerny is a Principal Engineer, R&D, in the Verification Group at Synopsys, Inc. He joined Synopsys in 2001 after 25 years in academia, as Professor of Computer Science at the Universit� de Montr�al. Eduard has a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Loyola College in Montreal, Canada, and a M.Eng. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. His interests have been in design, verification and test of hardware, and he is author of many articles in these areas.

Alan Hunter, BEng(Hons), MSc, is the Design Verification Methodology Programme manager at ARM Ltd. and is leading the design verification methodology work for ARM worldwide. This work covers all areas from CPU design verification through systems and system component design verification. His main areas of interest include optimizing design verification efficiency and quality, formal methods, and determinism in the design verification flow. Prior to joining ARM, Alan worked for a small formal verification company specializing in property and equivalence checking.

Andy Nightingale, BEng(Hons), MBCS CITP, is a consultant engineer at ARM Ltd and has led the SoC Verification group in ARM’s Cambridge and Sheffield design centers for the past four years. The group covers ARM PrimeXSys platforms and PrimeCell development, including advanced AXI- and AHB-based system backplane components such as bus interconnects and high-performance memory controllers. Prior to working at ARM, Andy worked as a real-time embedded systems engineer for a successful scientific instrument company, primarily serving the semiconductor industry.

Good Reference

I consider this book to be a good VMM Reference.

Please don't mistake this to be a complete SystemVerilog Bible. This is Verification Methodology Manual (VMM), and after reading this book, it's not a bad idea to think if this methodology is the right one for your project.

This book outlines several "rules", "recommendations", "suggestions" and "alternatives" in using VMM for your project. I found these to be useful to a certain extent. Although the examples weren't quite informative. For starters I would also suggest reading general book on object oriented programming along with this book.

Before you buy this book, check if you/your office has Synopsys VCS installed (Along with Documentation). If you happen to have complete VCS installed, you would get this book (pdf version) for FREE along with the VCS documentation. I came to know about this after buying this book. Any ways, it is good to have a hard copy.

Also, I found it useful to have other SystemVerilog books along with this one. It makes life easy to understand a (new) language and (new) methodology.

VMM is difficult

The book starts off fairly well through the first three chapters. Then all of a sudden it makes a huge leap and it becomes very difficult to follow. There are a lot of very advanced topics that require a lot of object oriented programming experience to understand. On my second reading I saw that even Janick says that he does not expect you to understand VMM on the first reading.

A class based methodology is a complex topic and the VMM book does not do much to make it any easier. If you are a C++ (or something similar) guru, then you might enjoy this book. Otherwise, save your money and download the white papers from the web.

Great book to learn about VMM.

I got this book at work to learn about VMM and the use of it.

It covers high level concepts and recommendations on developing a successful verification environment. It does not teach you the syntax or the basics of System Verilog. Beside teaching you these high level concepts, it covers in detail the use of the VMM base classes offered with Synopsys' VCS tools.

The book has code example in each topic covered which will make it easier to understand.

The topics covered include, but not limited to, Verification planning, assertions, testbench infrastructure, stimulus/response and coverage.

If you are using VMM in your development, then this book is definitely the manual that goes with it.

A must have for a successful verification engineer working with VMM. (6 out of 5 stars)

The Most Accessible Introduction to Porter. Period.

I have read two of Porter's books - Competitive Strategy and Competitive Advantage. And I have also, sort of, understood them - even though I haven't really internalized them for implementing in my company. The reason was that I did not quite get my mind around the concepts in a comprehensive manner as the ideas are in different books and they are not presented as an integrated whole (and, of course, I read them at different times). For the first time, in this book, the concepts are presented in a very accessible manner and connected in a very coherent manner. The books starts (Part 1) with What is Competition - elucidating on the concept of Competition, The Five Forces, and the Value Chain (CA). Part 2 addresses What is Strategy - in which the concepts of Creating Value; Trade-offs; Fit; and Continuity are discussed. The book is wrapped up with A Short List of Implications where in the author summarizes the takeaways and what they mean for us.

I am in the midst of developing a strategy for my company. These easy to understand frameworks have been extremely useful. In fact, after reading this book, I decided not to hire a consultant who was charging me an exorbitant sum ($4,000/day!) as I think that this book will be more helpful. I highly recommend this book esp if you are trying to get a good grasp of the concepts of Michael Porter. An absolute gem.

Good summary of Porter's ideas on business-unit strategy

Michael Porter's ideas on strategic management are important. However his books Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors and Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance are very dense (in addition to being 30 years old). This much shorter book is written in a journalistic style and conveys Porter's basic ideas relating to business-unit strategy.

The book serves as a first encounter with Porter's thinking, but I would really urge readers to study Porter's two first books as well. Even though Porter's books are 30+ years old, they are important. Classics have the remarkable feature of being relevant whenever they are read. Naturally, they are not perfect. They do not talk enough about service industries, but that was not really America in the 70s. The current book has the same deficiency; not that much about service industries.

Even if you have good familiarity with Porter I still cautiously recommend the book. It sometimes adds contextual information, small updates on Porter's thinking, and useful metaphors. For those of you who already have a fair amount of experience (important!) I would also recommend Good Strategy Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why It Matters.

The book is a summary of Porter's ideas from a journalist, so do not expect any deep, fundamental analysis. We get a fair share of thoughtless statements. We might be told that unbundling of an offering is good because not all customers value a lot of features. Then a bit later, we are told that bundling is good because it makes things easier for the customer's purchase decision. The author points out several times that we should use numbers when analysing. It would have been good if she heeded her own advice. Further on the negative side, the author treats Porter like God. It is okay to have Porter as a hero, but that does not justify hero worship. Sometimes it would have been nice with a more critical perspective. I am not talking of the mediocre academic who blurts out some standard canned critique of Porter. Since the author had access to Porter, more penetrating questions should have been asked. For instance, what is so good with the activity map when you already have a value chain? Personally, I find the activity map totally useless. Or for instance, when core competences are described in such a narrow fashion so they become a straw man. Most examples are straight out of current HBS case studies (eg Ikea, Zara, Southwest Airlines). You might find this positive or you might find the author a bit lazy in using the same examples.

UPDATE 2013
I have reread the book and I am much less positive today. The key reason is that the book only covers 20% of what I think an educated strategist/consultant/CEO should know about Porter's work. The second reason is that the case examples are mostly 10+ years old. One new company described is Zipcar and the stock market has taken that company on a straight downhill ride from 30 to around 10. Oh well.

With full access to Michael Porter a much better job could have been done as evidenced by the most interesting part of the book, the Q&A with Porter.

The book is still worthwhile reading if you read a lot of book. I rate the book three stars.

A better book covering exactly the same ground is Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works, in which the ex-CEO of P&G gives his description or Porter's theories. That is a four star book in my opinion. However, both books suffer from being verbose, but that sadly is how HBS Press likes their books.

A home run!

I read the whole book over a long weekend. I must say I could not put it down. For those of us who need an overview of a subject before we dive into the Porter books themselves, this is a great read. For those readers just looking for a summary of Porter's books, this works equally as well. I think this book did Michael Porter the biggest favor of all - it allowed non economics or business majors to understand the importance of strategy. It also turned down the spotlight of individual components of a business [i.e. OE and marketing plans] which, albeit important, must nevertheless be aligned with strategy to be successful. I liked it so much I wrote a blog about it to all my clients. Congratulations to the author.

Wishful Drinking - the Stand Up Routine

Being a big fan or Carrie's books and admiring how she could survive such a Hollywood upbringing, I really looked forward to this new book. While there are moments of hilarity, it really reads better if you imagine her standing up in front of an audience doing this as a cross between a stand up routine and a semi biography. As a book it just is not on the same caliber as her previous efforts. But i was able to get through it by picturing her reading this live and laughing along with the audience. It is witty and funny in places but more properly belongs as it started - a stand up show or audio book. I applaud her survival and honesty about her addictions and bipolar disorder, but this is better as an interview than a book.

This book is best as the unabridged audiobook read by the author herself! Much like David Sedaris, the only person that can fully convey the emotional impact and placement of emphasis in their experiences, is the author themselves. After listening to this three hour conversation with Carrie, as she does ask rhetorical questions of her reader/audiences, I wondered why she has not reached the level of gay icon status as Cher or Liza. The woman smoked Harrison Ford's dope, she turns men bald and gay, was the daughter of a gay icon (which gives you 10 points automatically), and has her fair share of True Hollywood Story moments - I mean come on! Has your mother given you a vibrator for Christmas, no? Only Carrie? Find out she ended up with a dead gay Republican in her bed...as one does and several other intriguing stories! A new tour of the one woman show also titled "Wishful Drinking" is being planned for 2009, so if you like Margaret Cho, Sarah Silverman, and Kathy Griffin and want to go a bit old school Enquirer - than make it a point to see her live!

Hilariously awesome

Even though I'm sure her one-woman show is funnier, Carrie Fisher's wit and humor definitely come across in this book. There's no plot, and little chronology, but it comes across the same as it would on stage. Just an iconic and kinda crazy woman, rambling on about her strange and interesting life. Any fans of Fisher or Star Wars would love it, and I think people who don't fit one of those categories would at least be amused by it. It's a quick read, with large print and pictures!

This book is great. I'm not normally into comparisons - just don't expect anything below the high standard of Dickens or Thackeray. I think you may find this an easier read though. The Good Companions are a 3rd rate theatre company represented by an unusual assortment of characters, each of them on their own unique passage through life, intersecting in the forming of the Good Companions. It's a story that's rich in humour, pathos and humanity. Priestly's characters are as real as any you may expect to meet in similar setting, with the exception of one or two intentionally "larger than life" caricatures who provide an enjoyable excess of colour and movement. It is the realistic and detailed portrayal of each individual's journey that gives the story it's robustness. A lot can be learnt from these characters and their particular era of fast-moving social change. A deeper longing for a distant shore resides in the soul of each character and though not expressed in words, it underpins their relationship with one another and drives the reader on to a satisfying conclusion, or as the young people say, denouement.

One of the defining works of the twentieth century

I remember reading this masterpiece during childhood ...and suddenly it had vanished from public view for the last few decades! I hunted the entire city from libraries to second hand book stalls to roadside vendors till one year ago I stumbled upon this work in a small roadside stall. Rereading this classic was a enriching experience. In haunting, subtle, melodious prose the author has brought to life an era and generation which has passed into oblivion. Yet... The timelessness of this book endures. Without descending into dark, depressing and morose prose, he has captured the life of rural England and the middle class during the depression. Yet the themes of hardship, human endurance and the ability of humanity to seek hope in the worst of time are eternal and relevant to this day. So for those who have missed the magic of J. B. Priestley, get drawn into his spell....enjoy!

Wonderful Story

I love this story. My parents read this book to my brother and me when we were kids and we have both re-read it as adults. I read The Good Companions and Let the People Sing! to my son when he was 8-9 years old and he loved them. J.B.Priestley has a genius for starting his characters out in cramped, miserable, unhappy, gray lives. You feel their imprisoned state, incarcerated by their personal unappreciative, unfriendly guardians of righteousness of varied sorts. Then, these prisoners of life make a desperate leap into the unknown. This jump off the edge of their known world becomes the center on which new adventures begin to spin, like cotton candy gathering on a stick. The fun becomes brighter in color and there's more of it the farther you go.

The stories do start off slowly and unhappily, providing the counterpoint reference for the hilarity to come. It's a bit like Enchanted April - a release from gray constricted misery into expanded dimensions of life. It's a bit like Peter Sellers' character in The Party, excruciatingly out of place until circumstances change, the pace picks up and broad farce ensues.

Maybe it's best to begin The Good Companions by hearing the story read out loud. Both my parents were terrific at imparting characters as they read - my mom is still the best Eeyore I have ever heard.

If you have the patience to wade through the foundation of unhappiness, you will immensely enjoy the fun and surprises to come.
