It's when she discovers the newly-dead woman in the hotel, and realizes someone has stolen the poor woman's hands, that she starts having misgiving. Here she is again, smack dab in the middle of another murder investigation, when she only signed on for free room and board as a reward for making a few disruptive ghosts obey the rules of ghostly behavior.
Twila rides in to do her share about the same time as Jack, Alice's ex. Even in the huge hotel, the quarters are too close for Alice to avoid remembering how she and Jack might be heading toward a friends-with-benefits twist to their divorced state. The villains are forced to step up their pace, though, with a homicide detective on the premises and the handless ghost who might expose their dastardly plans.

A book I didn't want to end.

"I left it open," he said in a frantic voice. "Who shut it? We have to get back in there!" I glanced overhead. The transom was closed. The thud of Danny's shoulder drew my attention, and the door shattered off its hinges. He dragged me after him - straight over under the poor woman's hanging body - and ordered, "Wrap your arms around her and try to hold her up some." Stifling my distaste, I did as Danny said. He climbed onto a chair he'd already pulled over beside the woman. Thank the Universe I still had on my coat, so it absorbed any still wet blood... except where my hands touched her bare legs. I also tried to ignore something else I'd only read about in research, never experienced. The poor woman's bowels had evacuated. Somehow Danny managed to get the rope loose from her neck. Her weight staggered me, but Danny quickly took the burden off me when he climbed off the chair. For an instant, he stared down at the body lolling in his arms, then appeared to control himself and carried her over to the bed, where he laid her down.

Alice is a writer. She is also the proud owner of a home full of paranormal residents. She and her Aunt Twila and friend `Granny' have become quite well known for their ability to talk to ghosts and make them understand that if they won't go through the light then they will behave or be banned to places where they can't bother humans. For her own residents she has come up with what she calls `The Howard and Alice Ghost Agreement.' Howard, being her Head Ghost has been put in charge of the other paranormal cohorts within her domain.

Alice received a call from Twila telling her they were to travel to Red Dollar, New Mexico, stay at the Red Dollar Hotel and bring the ghosts there under control so the hotel could sell. It appears the ghostly residents have been causing trouble whenever the real estate agent brings potential buyers by. Furniture has been thrown around, doors slammed, the signs destroyed, all scaring anyone off from wanting to buy. Their job is to create an agreement for the hotel ghosts. So off take Alice, her dog Trucker, her cat Miss Molly and Granny to spend a few days in the beautiful Red Dollar Hotel.

For the travelers, trouble starts in the beginning. There is a storm that has set in delaying Twila's flight. They get to the hotel only to find a woman hanging in one of the rooms leading Alice to the conclusion she had been murdered since her hands had been removed. A ghost that had appealed to Alice before leaving home suddenly appears again at the hotel. She encounters a ghost that is not only smelly and dirty but also has a mean streak, especially when it comes to cats. Alice's police ex-husband shows up for what she feels is no reason. And then there is True who was shot in the back of the head after winning the hotel in a poker game over 100 years before. True refuses to pass over and ends up reliving his shooting every night. All of this plus the discovery of a possible black conven working the area have the little group a real fix.

Dead Man Hand is a book I couldn't put down. The more I read and the closer I got to the end, the more I wanted it to just keep going. I didn't want it to end. I've enjoyed it so much that I must go back and read Dead Man Talking and Dead Man Haunt, the first and second books within this set. Author T. M. Simmons keeps you going with her style of writing.

A Ghost Hunting Delight!

Alice Carpenter has amazing gifts. She can not only see ghosts and talk to them, but she can chastise them for misbehaving (and if necessary banish them!). Along with a unique ghost hunting team (her aunt Twila Brown and "Granny" Chisholm) Alice packs up her her pets Trucker and Miss Molly and heads to the Red Dollar Hotel where the ghosts have been seriously acting up. As Granny says, "It's time to get up close and personal with them troublemakers!" Ghostly presences reveal themselves the moment Alice and Granny arrive at the hotel; a long-dead cowboy tips his Stetson to Alice and the ghost-hunting begins in earnest. It's not just the ghosts who are on the scene, though. Alice makes a grisly discovery; a woman's body is hanging from the rafters. What started out as a ghostly haunting is now a murder scene. As always, the dialogue is witty, the suspense is heart-pounding and the characters draw you right into the story. I loved WINTER PREY and have been waiting for another release from this talented author. You don't have to read books 1 and 2 to enjoy DEAD MAN HAND--but you will certainly want to! This book was a delight.

Fun and Chills From Start to Finish

T.M. Simmons has done it again! Twila, Alice, Trucker and Miss Molly set off on another ghostly adventure filled with mystery and whole lot of fun. Dead Man Hand is one of the most entertaining ghost tales I've read. Simmons really knows how to craft the ideal mix of humor, horror and good, old-fashioned sleuthing. The story centers on the Red Dollar Hotel and how its colorful, wild-west past entangles with the current-day murder of the hotel owner. The investigation leads the protagonists on a frightening and often funny trail that ends up in a supernatural showdown involving a dark coven, ghosts and even an elk! You gotta read it to find out how the heroes get out of this one! Simmons's characters are so real and lively--especially Granny, who can be feistier than all the others combined and is one little old lady you don't want to cross. She keeps you engaged and guessing 'til the end--this is definitely a must have if you like paranormal mysteries with a generous side of humor.

I've been very interested in UFO's for a long time. It's good to see some questions being asked that need to be answered. When other governments have admitted that they have UFO files, why can't our government do the same. If a setting president can not get the answers because of threats from other powerful people, then find out who these powerful people are and get rid of them, We don't need outside sources making decisions for our government. This book touched on many areas of interest that should entice others to follow in his footsteps to discover the truth.

A great resource

A useful and engagingly written resource. This book will be especially helpful for graduate students and early career professionals, but I suspect more senior scientists will enjoy reading it as well. I am going to highly recommend this book to my graduate students, and as a resource for graduate writing seminars in my department.

Contemporary readers who saw Burgess’ 1962 dystopian novel as a celebration of youth violence were as far off base as the teens since then who have thrilled to the transgressive violence it—or, at least, Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation—depicts. But paradox is at the heart of this book, as this newly restored, fiftieth-anniversary edition makes more clear than ever. Narrated by Alex, a teenage dandy who revels in language (he speaks a slang called Nadsat), music (especially Bach and Beethoven), and violence, especially violence. When imprisoned for murder, he is offered a chance at reform and leaps at it—but the reform turns out to be brainwashing, an aversion therapy that, alas, leaves him able to enjoy neither beatings nor Beethoven. Upon his release he becomes first a victim of his victims, then a cause c�l�bre of antigovernment activists before . . . well, publishers offered different endings to British and American audiences, as readers will discover here. What makes A Clockwork Orange so challenging, besides the language (“He looked a malenky bit poogly when he viddied the four of us”), is Burgess’ willingness to use an unsympathetic protagonist to make his point, which is essentially that it may be better to choose evil than to be forced to be good. (For, as it is put by two different characters: “When a man cannot choose he ceases to be a man.”) Readers can revisit or discover a classic that, while drawing from Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock, has in turn influenced authors from Irvine Welsh to Suzanne Collins. Extras include a thoughtful introduction by editor Andrew Biswell, reproductions of manuscript pages annotated by Burgess, and a previously unpublished chapter of a book that was to have been called The Clockwork Condition, in which Burgess intended to set the record straight about his intentions now that Kubrick’s film adaptation had made him famous. A Clockwork Orange

After reading the many reviews that have been posted here, I'm afraid mine will not be as eloquent, nor will it be a long and detailed description of the book. However, I might be able to express the importance of this book, and perhaps you'll even want to read it when you've finished my review.
I may have started out reading A Clockwork Orange because my friend told me how good it was. And then I continued to read it because it was engaging, disturbing, and thought provoking. Even though the book was written over 30 years ago, I believe it is still as powerful today as it was back then; perhaps even more so. Alex, the protagonist, is almost innocently committing violent crimes with his friends; for he isn't -trying- to be bad, he just is. He likes violence, and that's the way he is.
When Alex's friends gang up on him and leave him to be arrested by the police, Alex is sentenced to 14 years in prison. But then the opportunity to change presents itself to Alex, and he can't help but take the offer. Without ruining the story as so many previous reviewers have already done, I can say that when everything is said and done, important questions arise: is being good truly good if it is not by choice? Is it good to be bad, if that is what one chooses?
The book first came out in the 60s, and the American version lacked the last and 21st chapter from the original story. When it was republished, the book had the 21st chapter. Depending on which copy you read, with the last chapter or without it, the book will have an entirely different feel to it. The old copy represents the horrible realization that bad minds are always bad; the newer version leaves the reader with hope. Hope for Alex, and hope for oneself. Change is possible, the book says, no matter what sort of person you are.
A Clockwork Orange is truly a great work, one that will appeal to people for different reasons; and affect them in completely different ways. But it will affect them.

Darkly funny and satirical masterpiece

I have tried to write a review of this book at least ten times, but I can never seem to find the right way to describe it. This is mainly because I consider A Clockwork Orange to be one of the most painful, brilliant, and disturbing stories ever to be put down on paper. The invented slang used by Alex and his "droogs" is one of the best parts of the book. You'd think that the slang would make it confusing to read, but it doesn't! In fact, it's strangely catchy. They call it "nadsat" and it's a kind of Russified English. And I don't even speak Russian. (Burgess later invented "caveman speak" in Quest For Fire.)
The basic plot follows Alex and his gang of sadistic young punks as they run amok, beating, raping, and murdering with gleeful abandon in the London of the near-future. They then retire to a bar to drink drug-enhanced milk and plot their next crime. Eventually, Alex gets caught and is subjected to the will of the State. He's forcibly deprogrammed with the "Ludovico Technique" in which he's strapped to a chair, his eyelids held open by metal clamps, and forced to watch a long movie of non-stop murder, rape, torture, and other horrible violence until he gets physically ill at the mere thought of such acts. Then he is thrown back on the streets, a declawed kitten at the mercy of his former victims. The American re-edition is published with the controversial twenty-first chapter not included in Kubrick's film, plus an introduction by the author called "A Clockwork Orange Resucked."
Unfortunately, it's a sad reflection on society in that Alex was shunned because of his violence, and when caught, had violence inflicted on him in order to make him stop. This extremely graphic novel received mixed reactions, either hailed as genius or dismissed as violent pornography. I would recommend the movie as well; it's visually inventive and a must-see from one of the world's greatest directors.

A real tolchock in the yarbles, O my brothers

Fans of Ayn Rand's ATLAS SHRUGGED will no doubt disagree with me here, but _A Clockwork Orange_ may be the most remarkable man-against-the-State story ever published. Anthony Burgess's approach is in one significant sense the opposite of Rand's: where she tried to project a hero (and in my opinion failed; John Galt seems to be little more than a one-dimensional abstraction), Burgess projects a thoroughly depraved teenager and forces us to root for him anyway. It's not every author who can make you watch a bunch of gratuitous sex'n'violence and _then_ conclude that even great moral depravity trumps behavioristic psychology and mechanistic determinism.

What "protagonist" (or Your Humble Narrator, at any rate) Alex does in the first half of the novel will make you ill. But what the State does to him to "cure" him makes his nadsat gang violence seem almost . . . well, "innocent" isn't quite the right word, but the fact that I'm even thinking of that word is an indication of Anthony Burgess's power.

For Burgess, the important thing is moral choice, and the possibility of choice entails the possibility of evil. Once Alex has been "reformed" by the very latest techniques of behavioristic science, it's no longer even _possible_ for him to be moral -- and that's somehow more horrible than any of his own horrible acts.

But Burgess stops short of making volition an object of idolatry. In the first place, he doesn't make any argument that Alex's actions were somehow "good" merely because he had _chosen_ them; quite the contrary. In the second place, even though Alex bears the full blame for all his depraved actions, there are hints scattered throughout the book that if he weren't living in a "socialist paradise," he just wouldn't have been acting this way in the first place. (For example, both his parents are required by law to work full-time. They also seem curiously unwilling to discipline their son, or even inquire what it is he does when he goes out at night.)

I read this book twenty years ago in an edition that had something this one lacked: a glossary. I thought I was going to miss it, but I didn't; Burgess is a fine writer and anticipates his readers' needs very nicely. If the meaning of one of his Russian-import slang terms isn't obvious from context, he works in a definition. (And there are a few glossaries available online anyway.)

The earlier edition also lacked something this one has: a twenty-first chapter. I hadn't read this before -- it was left out of the American edition of the book and therefore out of Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation as well -- but to my mind it makes a better ending for the book.

Sure, as Burgess himself admits, it's a little crude; we never actually _see_ Alex develop into an adult, we just suddenly learn at the end that he's growing up and becoming ashamed of his past actions. But the novel wouldn't be complete if Burgess hadn't introduced that final bit of irony: after all the State's torturous efforts to "reform" the poor misguided youth, in the end he just sort of, well, gets over it.

Other readers may have different opinions -- and according to Burgess's delightfully snarky introduction of 1986, that's okay with him. And he almost sounds resigned to the fact (for it probably is a fact) that of all his thirty-two novels -- not to mention his nonfiction (including a fine exposition of James Joyce released in the UK as _Here Comes Everybody_ and in the US as _Re Joyce_) and a whole bunch of music -- in the end it's this book for which he will be universally remembered.

He may be right that it isn't his best work, and he's undoubtedly right that it's a bit preachy. But it's undoubtedly the book for which I myself will remember him. And I'll make no appy polly loggies for that, O my brothers, for it's a horrorshow book with the impact of an oozy across the glazzies, and no mistake. This malchick and his droogs deserve a place in literary history.
